Hughes looks to move players on

Football and finance don’t always mix well for some folk but John Hughes understands what makes the game work.

“This is a business as well as a football club. If you offered me £4m for David Wotherspoon just now, I would take it.”

“As a manager, you have to know the whole side of the game, how to produce players, how to sell them on.”

John Hughes can play the daft laddie all he wants but he knows the football game inside out and he knows how to get players to Hibs and how to get the best out of them.

No offence to Hibs but players like Anthony Stokes, Liam Miller and Alan Gow probably never saw themselves as being Easter Road at this stage in their career. However, life doesn’t always go to plan and sometimes you need to regroup and start again.

John Hughes will have sold this to these players. Stokes and Gow had the best form of their career under Hughes at Falkirk and his influence helped them clinch big moves at the time. There is no reason why they and Miller and any other player at Easter Road cant put themselves in the shop window for a big club.

On one hand, the fans may be annoyed as no one enjoys being seen as a feeder club but if bigger clubs want your players, then they must be doing something right. If Hibs were languishing in the bottom 6, there would be no speculation about players moving on, Hughes would be worried about his future as opposed to the players and the fans would be unhappy.

This is a better situation for the Hibs support to be in.

Another thing that Hibs have in their favour is Rod Petrie who is able to get good fees for any player exiting Easter Road.

Petrie is also capable of extracting a higher fee from Celtic and Rangers so if Hibs star players are traversing the M8 to Glasgow, Hibs have usually picked up a premium price.

Is Hughes right to look to sell Hibs players on?
