Walter to reign at Rangers for one more season

Ally being groomed for one more year

Rangers fans everywhere will be rejoicing over the news that boss Walter Smith has agreed to stay on for one more season and lead the club’s charge for a three-in-a-row league triumph. Smith will be joined in the dug-out once again by Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall.

This announcement ensures Rangers fans can relax a little and perhaps enjoy the World Cup. They have Maurice Edu and Madjid Bougherra to cheer on and they know their most celebrated of managers will remain in charge.

Walter Smith has said all along that he wanted reassurances about the finances of the club before he committed his future so Rangers fans will be seeing this as a positive move. After all, Smith would have to be insane if he decided to go into his final season with the sort of funds and budget that would leave his team exposed.

Rangers will have to dig deep, rely on youngsters and squeeze every effort out the squad but this is the sort of fight that Smith excels in.

The last time Walter Smith declared his hand early, it ended disastrously for Rangers with a barren season and throwing away the chance to surpass Celtic’s nine in a row record. Ironically enough, the situation was fundamentally different back then for Rangers with some media circles trumpeting about how the club could utilise different squads for Europe compared to domestic matches.

Much of the blame of the wasted millions is placed upon Dick Advocaat’s broad shoulders but Walter Smith had the wheels firmly in motion. However, having known the pain of walking away with tears of regret and loss, you can only assume that Smith has no desire to do so again.

It also gives Ally McCoist one more year to hone his skills and learn from “the gaffer” whilst he still can. The cheeky chappy will always be a Rangers legend for his goal-scoring exploits but he will be keen to show he can cut as a manager as well.

Perhaps the presence of Smith will convince players like Kris Boyd to sign on again at Ibrox? The impact this announcement could have on Scottish football may go further than just who gives the Rangers team talk.

With Celtic still no (publicly) further forward in announcing their new manager, Rangers have stolen a march yet again on their Glasgow rivals and can look forward to the new season.

Expect comments about the chase and how it is being welcomed to flow from the Rangers fans in the near future.

Happy with this announcement?

more anti-football, more humliations in europe, more 0-0 draws and defeats away at top 6 grounds, i am gutted! and to make matters worse, super ally is taking over, ye couldnt make this rubbish up, its the kind of crap Martin Bain would come up with to sell season books, there is not a chance in hell i will at Ibrox next season to watch more non football and more of lee mcculloch and the like.

    gutted, i really am.

i respect walter as a man, as a Ranger he is a legend, but his time was well n truly up after the Uefa final, he should have went there and then after that disgraceful performance.

how hard working true professionals like lambert, macpherson, williamson, davies and mcinnes are feeling knowing that ally is taking over with no experence in management and no tactical nouse whatsoever i dont know. its shocking. mccoist was in charge of every game we struggled against 1st division teams in the cup games, even needing replays against a few very poor teams, he hasnt got it, he is NEVER manager material in his life.

im a bit sick actually. i think its embarassing.

i am dreading europe, lee mcculloch and 40 year old davie weir up against the the best in europe, we will once again be europes cannon fodder.

thanks again mr owner, once again you have done us over!

i would be a bit happier if i knew big lee was getting dropped and we were going to play Davis centre mid where he should be, Edu getting a game every week, when he should and Thomson in next to them like he should be and 2 REAL wingers added to the team like we NEED, but WE ALL KNOW Big Lee will be playing, Edu benched as usual and Davis wide right again, its pathetic and so predictable. Oh and the whole team will have to defend on our 18 yard line just to acccomodate Big Captain Dave. Crap, boring, predictable and soooo easy to play against.

james im glad your gutted , im one happy season ticket holder .as for europe we know were going to get a tough ride but last year walter attempted to please the fans with playing two up front but it was men against boys . we can only play 1 up front in europe as we done in the eufa cup run . youl never beat a greyhound with a lab . as for the players you named they gave thier all for us last season and IF you were a supporter you would appreciate that . if it wasnt for a 92 nd min goal from dundee utd we could have had a treble and a champions league place , we are not going to sign 5 million pound players any more so the silky football your looking for wont happen ,so walter and his staff in my eyes are the best to get the best out what we have maybe adding another 3 or 4 .
a big year for wee fleck and naismith ,little, shinnie ,lafferty, and as for the captain i wish he was thirty , big lee would be the 1st name on the team sheet against celtic , and yer man edu take away the celtic goal has hardly set the heather on fire.
scottish football is struggling bigtime and to replace the ones you slag playerwise and managerial wise we would be in 130 million debt get behind the team jamesy bhoy .
    ARISE SIR WALTER

to think it takes players costing 5 million to get silky soccer is ridiculous, that is a dreamers statement. We are not going to be a good as Barcelona allegedly but we should be MUCH better, we should be better than a Stuttgart in crisis and a Romanian team no one has ever heard of, we shoudl have gave Zenit a better game(we got to that final with draw after draw)

to say walter appeased the fans last year with 2 up front is ridiculous, no he didnt, he done what he always does and played players out of position and played players who should be nowhere near a Rangers jersey, no matter what state he and the chairman had got us in financially!

big lee first name on the team sheet v celtic, why? coz it gives them an automatic advantage? hes a man short, a thug who kicks anything that moves. The Anti-Footballer.

edu is an athlete, a young, hungry and exceptional footballing talent, if you cant see that, then you better call houston coz theres a problem!

giving your all, is that what it is now? doesnt matter how good you are just give yer all? well i want a game then! i demand more than just giving their all, i want to see someone who can pass n move, someone who can trap a ball effectively, someone who can challenge for 50/50 headers and win them. Our whole squad lacks so many basics its not true, our strikers cant create chances for themselvs, what are the coaches doing at Murray Park? Our set pieces have been a disgrace for years, no one to put the ball over a wall and into a corner of the goal, thats not hard, players of all levels do it for fun, but not at Rangers! Davis’ one and only was a fluke coz he cant do it anymore, Thommo tries but cant do it, Boyd blasts a hit and hope after hit n hope, mostly hitting a stagnant wall, the lack of technique over a deadball at Ibrox is shocking. The lack of bottle to shoot on sight is frightening.

i too wish captain dave was 30, but guess what jaz, hes not, hes WAY past his best, and is an embarassment in europe. he cant even run and his distribution and passing is among the worst the mediocre SPL.

130 million in debt to make us better?, dont be stupid, FREE Dave, let him go back to his family and retire, SELL or FREE Big Lee(whatever it takes to get rid of this anti-footballer whos keeping steve davis out of his position) and we have better players waiting to take their places. It costs nothing, ZERO!! Save on their wages and there is better bosmans out there who can play real football, who CAN do the basics and would love to play for a great club like ours, Smith, McCoist and McDowall this summer would not have had a pay off, let them go and replace them with a younger, hungrier and more attacking/tactically ambitious manager/coaching team and watch us take Euroep by storm with players like Bougherra, Davis, Edu, Fleck, Lafferty, even Naismith all played in their CORRECT positions we could be some team.

There is the basis of a real strong team at Ibrox but we are let down by a few imposters picking up wages for nothing and players getting a game who dont deserve to play for The Rangers.

We should be doing so much better with what we have but while better players dont get their chance or when they do its out of position, then we will always be depressing to watch and pathetic on the European stage. It doesnt take hundreds of millions, it takes guts, bottle, determination mixed with skill, luck and guile to beat the best, its only 11 v 11 at the end of the day. Any team can be beaten if your main man, the coach gets his homework done right, the guy who gives Walter the heads up on our opponents is the guy who got humped off Dumfermline in his 1 and only game as manager. He doesnt have a clue!

Would i rather have mcculloch in midfield rather than edu or davis, NO

would i rather have Weir at the heart of our defense instead of a Webster or even Wilson? NO

has Walter signed too many players who are jacks of all trades and masters of none? YES

does he play players out of position to the detriment of better players within the squad? YES

are we crying out for 2 real wingers? Its obvious to anyone!

does our team lack creativity? Yes and has done for years.

does it lack skill? Yes and has done since Walters been back.

    could we do better? Obviously.

Walter should of course already be Sir Walter Smith, but like Davie Weir, his time has come and gone.

Celtic can plan ahead for the next few years knowing what our hand is and its a poor hand, more of the same dross from Rangers and a rookie taking charge next year makes it even easier for them!

i will always love my club and always be a fan but while i disagree with the people at the head table at Rangers, i cannot support them(financially) but of course i am only 1 of millions of Bears around the world, most of them like you Jaz will think im nuts, a tiny minority who understand football will know what im saying.

james trying to play with two wide men is almost impossible, well trying to get two tricky wingers to run back to thier own box and defend is , will work against teams where we have most of the possesion but in europe they would destroy us .As for stuggart thier wage bill is four times ours so technically they are better players . i agree we need ceativity in the team we havent had a player who could beat someone in years but rothen was ment fo be that and turned out to be the worst french international ive seen .
As for wier let him help the team when needed i would love webster and bougy or bougy and wilson or webster and wilson but maybe two of them wont be there so hes not a bad sub to come in when needed.
so walter heres to 3 in a row

    James

Why dont you go away mate?

Every article on Rangers you put a negative spin on it

Most goals scored last season? Rangers
    Top goalscorer? Rangers player
    Most assists? Rangers player

Keep listening to the mhedia about negative football James, their spin seems to be working on you.
