In a move that would tie in neatly with the signing of South Korean star Ki Sung Yueng, the latest rumours regarding the sponsorship of Celtic has thrown Samsung into the frame.

The Celtic Underground site have raised the likelihood of this rumour and regular readers of their site may find it rings one or two bells.

The site had a very informative piece about Korean star Ki Sung Yueng, credited to Korean Steve, which served as a preview to the player arriving in Glasgow. The article can be found here

Aside from stating how big the player appears to be in Seoul, this little snippet adds a lot of sense to the rumour;

When Samsung bought out the rights of Emirates Airlines to sponsor Chelsea, this was not a surprise because Chelsea were seen at the time as being the best and biggest soccer team in the EPL so in their mind, a Korean company should sponsor the best team in the best league.

No one is going to sit here and say that Celtic are the best in the SPL or in a European sense, but their new signing is regarded as the major player in South Korea. The signing of a sponsorship deal for his club would make perfect sense for a company looking to make a major impact in South Korea.

You only have to think about the Asian companies who sponsor English Premier League teams to realise that there can benefit from sponsoring teams in a league far removed from one of the target markets.

If there is a South Korean media presence around Sung Yueng similar to the Japanese media presence around Nakamura, there will be a lot of exposure for any brand that chooses to tie in with Celtic.

Many readers will be appalled at the talk of brands and markets but there is no doubt that this is the game that Celtic have to play now.

If the Samsung rumour comes off, it will see Celtic moving into a different level of sponsorship compared to the rest of the SPL.

Celtic fans, any objections if this comes true?
