Goal-less in Paisley means another game

Although it was a fairly drab game, there are some positives to take from the 0-0 draw for Rangers. In all likelihood, they will defeat St Mirren at home, progressing to the quarter finals and it will bring in further funds to the Ibrox coffers.

The gate receipts of the tie will add a little bit extra that wasn’t budgeted for and you would think that Sky will be looking to televise the replay, bringing in further funds. In that respect, it has been a successful day for Rangers, keeping fans and Donald Muir happy!

Of course, a 0-0 draw means another game will be added to the Rangers fixture list and with a thin squad, this may not be what Walter Smith would have looked for. Rangers have had an excellent record in the Cups since Smith returned but there have been a number of draws and replays.

The replays against Hibs and Partick Thistle in the 2007/08 season contributed to Rangers fixture congestion but with no European football this time, it should not have a serious impact on the Ibrox club.

You would have to say that St Mirren’s chance of an upset is gone and the Paisley side will be rueing some missed opportunities and the return of Madjid Bougherra. The Algerian stopper was able to pop up in the right place at the right time for Rangers in defence and gave an additional outlet in attack.

Walter Smith will take solace from the return of Miller and Boyd, even if both players looked well short of their best.

Another cup match may not be the worst thing with regards giving these players a run out to improve their match sharpness.
