Bad News Continues For Rangers

The soap opera that is going on down Ibrox way shows no sign of stopping and you get the impression that some folk will be shocked if they wake up one day and there is no new revelation about the club.

Some fans aren’t worried; they are convinced the “Celtic minded” media is turning the screw on their club and are happy that the club are responding in such a strong fashion. Already in the Whyte regime, the Daily Record were whipped back into line, the BBC were forced to backdown and apologise and now the Herald and Evening Times have been told they will not be granted access to the club.

Is this a good thing?

If the media outlet can be shown to be telling lies and painting the club in a bad fashion, you can see why a club would not want to be proactive in their relationship with a media outlet. However, many were of the opinion that there were no lies in the reporting of the stories that saw Rangers react badly, merely opinions based on facts and evidence. In this regard, it is certainly a bold move being taken by Craig Whyte, Jack Irvine and whoever else is running the public relations front at Ibrox.

Rangers have also been active in shutting down blogs with Phil McG’s site being suspended. Again, all Rangers fans will raise a glass to that outcome citing that the journalist is no friend of theirs. There have also been rumours that the Celtic Hub site has been taken down as well…but in the light of the Martin Bain papers, there may be a lot of firefighting for Rangers to carry out this weekend.

The boardroom is different from the footballing side but you wonder if any of the playing team will read through these notes as they idle some time before taking the field against Dundee United and if so, how will they react to the figures listed within?

It is a big enough match for Rangers and not one where they need any distraction.

The Martin Bain papers can be found here:

Case Papers

or:

Case Papers

It should be pointed out that these papers came to light through the Rangers Tax Case site. Now, you will probably have your own opinions on that site, so you may not wish to view the papers because of where they originated but there is no doubt that whoever is behind that site is providing an insight to the case that the traditional media can’t or won’t provide for fans. Many Rangers fans are of the opinion that the site is ran by a Celtic fan looking to cause trouble but surely there must be some fans with a desire to find out what is going on inside Ibrox at the moment.

Some will jump on them and declare them to be the most explosive read since the 1973 Beano annual (a great read), whereas others will consider them a hullabaloo about nothing, no doubt some will even say it’s all a big con to smoke out snitches but whatever is behind them, they do make interesting reading…especially for 0930 on a Saturday morning!

With Ally McCoist now mentioning concerns about the HMRC case, Rangers fans, are you now starting to worry about the financial future of the club or do you think it has all been overstated?

He plays it entirely wrongly though

It can’t be easy settling into a new job with so much expectation around you but Ally McCoist hasn’t quite found his feet in interviews yet. It just goes to show that the years of media practice he has had, in various guises, are no match for the pressure you are under when you are the man with all the responsibility.

This isn’t a surprise though, McCoist will be under a lot of pressure, by himself let alone anyone else, to be a success at Rangers and no doubt one or two slips will come until he starts to feel more comfortable. As a manager you want to defend your players at all times and this is what McCoist was attempting to do after accusations of his team being a bit dirty after 3 red cards already this season.

Ally McCoist

Even though McCoist admitted that Steven Whittaker had been silly in Sweden, McCoist then went on to say:

They don’t play the same way as Brits. I’m not sure you’d get too many Brits going down and doing that but it’s part and parcel of European football

Which is frankly a ludicrous statement and an extremely embarrassing one for any modern manager to make. There is no doubt a culture of British is Best for many within the Ibrox support but this sort of comment is as out-dated as the stand-up routine of Jim Davidson.

After all, would you not think that the following video clip was an example of a player going down far too easily?

It may be part and parcel of European football but it seems that it is also a common sight in the SPL as well, so perhaps Ally McCoist is off the mark when he is accusing foreigners of diving.

Add in the fact that Steven Naismith is developing a reputation for being the most consistent divers in Scottish football and perhaps the Brits are doing pretty well in matching the “antics” of the Europeans.

Rangers will need to be on their guard tonight in Slovenia with a good result against Maribor vital to ensure the Ibrox club can book their place in the Europa League group stages. Rangers have the players to do the damage away from home but they aren’t a million miles away from matching their European counterparts either.

The McCoist comments were told to the Sun: McCoist talks to the Sun

Glamour or glory???

The Europa League Play-Off draw is a bit of a mixed bag for the Scottish teams but hopefully at least two of the three clubs can get through.

It does look grim for Hearts although Harry Redknapp’s promise to play youngsters and squad players in the Europa League may give an outside chance. Then again, people shouldn’t believe a single world that Harry Redknapp says so who knows what team will line-up against the Jambos. Regardless of the line-up, it should be a good trip for Hearts fans and one that should create a lot of memories.

Rangers seemed to have got the most straight-forward of ties in NK Maribor but then again, that was what would have been said after they were drawn against Malmo! The Slovenian side will provide a robust challenge to Rangers but you really would have to think that Ally McCoist’s men will have enough to get through the tie. Then again, with just one European win in 23 games, no one at Ibrox should be taking this tie too lightly.

Maribor have played three league games this season, winning them all by a 2-1 score line, sitting second in the league (Maribor have a GD of +3 whereas Domzale have a GD of +7).

Celtic however are off to Switzerland to face FC Sion. The Swiss side finished fourth in their league but defeated Neuchatel Xamax in the Cup final. The internet is already abuzz with the fact that FC Sion hold the world record for winning all 12 cup final appearances they have made. The ground is a 16,5000 capacity so there may well be a limit on the travelling support that make it across to Switzerland.

Again, Celtic should have every reason to feel as though they can progress to the group stages but with their form in Europe not being great, especially on the road, there should be nothing taken for granted.
The Uefa site indicated that both Glasgow sides were drawn away from home in the first leg, suggesting both would be at home in the second leg but there may be a switch to one of the ties. In short, don’t go booking flights until the legs are confirmed!

There is no doubt that Rangers had a bad day yesterday. Exiting the Champions League presents a financial catastrophe for the club that has based their financial expectations on gaining entry to the money-making event. They also finally missed out on the capture of David Goodwillie, who eventually signed on the dotted line at Blackburn Rovers.

It certainly wasn’t the time for putting the boot in that can be very harsh and reactionary in the moments after a defeat. Yes, there were some fans screaming for the head of McCoist and Whyte but hopefully today they will have calmed down and realised there is still a long way to go and these men need time at the club.

However, the reaction to yesterday’s defeat is equally baffling and actually makes you wonder if the reporters watched the game…or were basing their opinion on second hand comments from people like Billy Dodds or Pat Nevin.

With the exception of Whittaker and Bougherra, whose stupidity knew no bounds in Sweden, it was implied that the Rangers performance was heroic. It showed effort and commitment but coming as it does less than a year when a well-drilled Rangers side went to Old Trafford and took a point in a controlled and intelligent, if a bit dull, performance, to label last night’s performance as heroic was just silly.

Rangers were denied a domestic treble last season when their players lost the plot at Parkhead and the same outcome occurred last night. Going into that Cup replay, Rangers, stung by a 3-0 league defeat at Celtic Park, stated they would make it tougher for Celtic. Loan player Kyle Bartley indicated that the team were not going to stand about, they were going to get in Celtic’s faces. It was a tactic that saw Whittaker sent off in the first half and Madjid Bougherra in the second half.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Ally McCoist was quoted as saying that Rangers would get in the faces of Malmo and it resulted in Whittaker being sent off in the first half and Madjid Bougherra in the second. Rangers had learned nothing about how indiscipline can cost a side and it was their downfall.

Nikica Jelavic scored brilliantly on the volley to level the tie and Rangers can complain about the lack of a red card for retaliation on Lee McCulloch. Durmaz should definitely have seen red. However, on the night, McCulloch, Edu and Steven Naismith could all have been given their marching orders (the lunacy of Naismith kicking the ball off an opponent, considering what had already transpired on the night was incomprehensible) and what was going through Alan McGregor’s mind in injury time with his karate kick motion, we’ll never know.

As it was, Rangers only have themselves to blame because even with the lack of men, they had the chances over the two legs. Naismith has to take a lot of responsibility on his shoulders after a trio of gilt-edged chances went a-begging over the two legs. These chances would have been bread and butter to a clinical finisher, which makes the non-appearance of David Healy even the more puzzling for Rangers fans. If McCoist didn’t fancy him to grab goals, why was he given a contract?

It was well known that Rangers were in the hunt for a striker and it looked as though that man was David Goodwillie.

Rangers fans have been quick to vent their anger at Dundee United and chairman Steven Thomson for not selling Goodwillie to the Ibrox club but the blame has to lie a lot closer to home.

United stated that the Blackburn Rovers offer is better for them and without going into details, that is fair enough. Even if Rangers bid was financially bigger (which there is nothing to say it was, or in the manner or method of payments), United would find a bid from down South for their player to be more attractive than selling to a Scottish club. United may not be seen as a direct rival for Rangers with regards to both teams league ambitions but the two clubs regularly face each other 4 times a season with the potential for more in the Cups.

Rod Petrie at Hibs has shown clubs the way to go. It is possible to squeeze the big Glasgow two for as much money as possible if they are the only interested parties for a player. Also, if a club from down South wants a player, as long as the difference in bids isn’t too much, it makes business sense to sell the player outside the SPL.
This isn’t taking into consideration the concern that clubs must have when it comes to allowing Rangers to pay transfers over a lengthy period of time. There are too many unknown variables within Ibrox at the moment with regards to money to make this a viable solution.

Only a foolish club would accept staggered payments from Rangers at the moment. Some will point to the deal that Rangers agreed with Hearts for the transfer of Lee Wallace but surely Heart of Midlothian are the dictionary definition of “foolish club”, if not an even harsher term.

Ally McCoist seems to be regularly upset with the fact that he is unable to speak to players directly and personally tell them of his vision for Rangers. There is a reason for that and it is the fact that he doesn’t have permission to speak to the players. If McCoist is feeling frustration at the thwarted attempts, it should be at the money men in his own club who are attempting to broker these deals in a completely amateurish way.

United fans will think that their club acted perfectly well throughout the transfer and it is hard to see what Rangers fans are upset over…apart from the fact that they haven’t rolled over to get their tummy tickled. There is also the fact that having Goodwillie on board may have been the difference between Champions League progress and demotion to the Europa League.

With only 2 league games gone and four points in the bag, it certainly isn’t panic time at Ibrox. There is still nearly a month of the transfer window to go and a lot can happen between now and then. However, there is a need for people to honestly appraise the situation.

The co-efficient points of Malmo indicates what an upset it was for Rangers to lose to them and even a lack of match sharpness cannot be used as an excuse for such a poor showing over the two legs. Ally McCoist is definitely in the deep end and publicly praising the players who kept their heads is not a bad thing for a manager to do. However, if McCoist was also praising those players in private, he may be setting up poor precedents for the season ahead.

Early starts and early rises, that is what is facing the fans heading to Ibrox to welcome in the 2011/12 season. First of all, there is the business of unfurling the league flag which symbolises Rangers winning the title back in May but as soon as the pomp and ceremony of that dies down, the action begins in earnest.

It really is all eyes on Ally McCoist to see how he makes the step up from assistant manager to being his own man. It appears that with the suit, a vow to watch a lot of the game from the stands and in some of the players he has been after, Ally will take a lot from Walter but then again, is that any surprise?

Having worked under and alongside Smith for so long, it makes sense to use this as a template and with the players McCoist has at his disposal, it makes sense to keep following the route that has made them so successful.

The new man does have new men at his disposal though and the travelling Jambos may see a familiar face lining up against. Lee Wallace may have cost a lot more than Rangers initially bid for him but he has the potential to be a good player for Rangers for many years. Injuries dogged Wallace in the past year but he will be keen to get off to a winning start and to ensure he is in good condition for the Champions League qualifier on Tuesday against Malmo.

Rangers will be pretty much as they were from last season and it will be interesting to see if there are any tactical alterations or differences under McCoist.

Hearts fans have seen a number of new faces come to the club and they appear to be all set for a new campaign. The only problem is, with the exception of John Sutton, who has the potential to be a great signing, the rest are pretty run of the mill SPL signings. Perhaps Mehdi Taouil will take a step on but he was a player who very much flattered to deceive at Kilmarnock. Having one reasonably good game in five or a sparking five minutes out of 90 may be enough to have some fans cheering your name but the Hearts fans will be expecting more from the player who has featured for the Moroccan national team.

It will be interesting to see what Jambos team Vladimir Romanov selects after the controversy of his meddling in the selection during Heart’s last trip to Glasgow. You would have to hope that Jim Jefferies will get full control of his team this time around.

It hardly seems like a break at all but both teams will be looking to grab the points that will have them off and running.

Hearts secure in 3rd as well

It was almost a night of complete closure in the SPL this evening with results tying up most of the outstanding issues and even the one remaining issue could be completed tomorrow.

Hamilton have threatened to keep themselves in the top flight but their hopes ended tonight with a defeat against St Johnstone. This meant that St Mirren didn’t have to win at Pittodrie but a cracking 1-0 away win sealed the Lanarkshire side’s fate and places the Buddies three points behind Aberdeen. The fact that Danny Lennon’s men sit just 2 goals behind Craig Brown’s team could see the Buddies leapfrog the Dons on the final day of the season.

It was a disappointing loss for Brown but he got a massive result earlier in the day when the SFA decided he was to receive nothing stronger than a censure for his behaviour on the touchline with John Boyle. Nothing is surprising anymore about the SFA disciplinary panels and reviews so no one can be shocked about Brown being let off with this, the second time the former Scotland manager has behaved in a poor manner on the touchline this season.

At Ibrox, Rangers came flying out of the blocks in Walter Smith’s last home game of his Ibrox career and buried Dundee United with a spirited opening. The game wasn’t even a minute old before Steven Naismith went down in the box, a feat he repeated moments later but the opener was to come from the £4m hit man and Rangers buy of the season, Nikica Jelavic.

Jelavic made Gary Kenneth look foolish (well, no more so than the Hills Have Eyes star usually looks) by creating acres of space in the box and directing the ball home. The lead was doubled when Rangers man for a title run-in, Kyle Lafferty neatly finished.

Knowing it was job done, Rangers downed tools, keeping a poor United side at bay without ever exerting themselves. The league could be won tomorrow night if Hearts beat Celtic but even if the hoops do avoid defeat in what will be a battle at Tynecastle, Rangers will complete the job in style at Rugby Park on Sunday.

With the P.A. system making Smith man of the match and the Rangers fans unfurling a banner declaring the boss to be a legned (sic), there were plenty of tears for the final home bow of a man who was worked wonders during his two spells at the Ibrox club.

Money and experience makes the difference

In the title run-in, you could do with a bit of luck and Hearts keeper Jamie McDonald gave Rangers that edge when he made an absolute hash of Nikica Jelavic’s opener. The £4m striker has been central to Rangers during the run-in and this signing can claim to have been the one that likely sees the Ibrox side over the line.

The Rangers squad is the most expensively assembled team in the SPL and the Ibrox side spent a considerable amount of money over the course of this season but Jelavic’s capture looks to have been repaid with the likely League and League Cup double. After all, it was the striker that grabbed the extra-time winner in the League Cup final.

In the end, the experience of the Rangers management team and squad has gone a long way to securing silverware, as many expected. Many Rangers fans felt it would be a much easier season than has actually transpired, predicting that the inexperienced and hastily assembled challenge from Celtic would implode long before the run-in but in the end, Rangers could be champions by midweek.

There was a lot of leniency shown towards the home side by Ian Brines, who has managed to show a consistency in his performances that players could only dream of. It’s not as though he was biased towards Rangers, although the Ibrox side did benefit from Weir, Bougherra, Laugherty and Jelavic all avoiding early bookings, Brines is just an abysmal referee – as he also showed at Celtic Park last weekend by not booking Beram Kayal for a clear bookable offence. It can only be hoped that Brines is better in his day job as a Strathclyde policeman otherwise there will be plenty of criminals getting away scot free.

In the second half, the Jambos will point to the fact that the sending off issued to serial red card receiver Jonsson was slightly harsh, especially with the first half leniency but yet again, Brines has shown himself to be a terrible referee.

Rangers also got a break in their second goal when Steven Naismith was clearly offside in the build-up to the Kyle Lafferty’s goal but with Steven Davis, completely unmarked, making it 3-0 before half-time, the home fans were able to get the party started before lunch-time. A late own goal added the icing on the cake as Rangers once again went on the goal rampage in a post-split fixture.

Hearts will be keeping an eye and an ear on the Dundee United v Motherwell score but even if the Arabs do their work, the Jambos will be fired up at home on Wednesday to get the final point they need.

As for Rangers, depending on tomorrow’s scoreline at Rugby Park, they could get the opportunity to claim the title on Tuesday versus Dundee United in Walter Smith’s final match at Ibrox but regardless of that happening…the Rangers fans will just be counting down the days until they clinch their 3rd title in a row.

The talk has always been there…..

Newspaper reports suggests that Rangers are in line for a hefty fine and a three match ban for supporters travelling to away games following the repeated singing of songs which have been classified as unacceptable by Uefa. Rangers have said there will be a hearing later this month and Rangers will plead their case strongly.

From the initial comments that Martin Bain has made on the subject, it is easy to see what sort of defence that Rangers will put up if these charges are placed against them.

“We are utterly dismayed to be informed by UEFA that they are to take disciplinary action. We will defend the club’s position vigorously.

“UEFA have made clear in any previous disciplinary hearings that sanctions have been mitigated by the extensive work the club does to tackle sectarianism.

“We are not saying there is not a problem but we are saying that for many years we have made strenuous attempts to address it. We do, however, believe it is absurd to think only Rangers supporters sing offensive or sectarian songs. We are left to conclude there is a disproportionate focus on us.

“It has also become clear there are people who have been determined to undermine our club at any cost and have constantly lobbied for action against Rangers.”

Blaming people who are lobbying against these songs being sung….as opposed to focusing on the people who are singing these songs, is a very bizarre move. Would it be okay if no one was lobbying against these songs, is that the real issue? That’s akin to punching someone in the street and then moaning about someone phoning the police to inform them of your behaviour… For the avoidance of doubt, Martin Bain should name these people who are so hell bent on undermining Rangers.

Also, is it any wonder that Rangers fans constantly deal in “whataboutery” when this is the official line being peddled by the club? It basically boils down to “aye, we’re bad but so are everybody else, why are you picking on us?”

Rangers have told their fans on numerous occasions to cut out these songs but not because they believe they are wrong or in an attempt to re-educate fans but because they will be in trouble if they don’t stop singing them.

This would suggest that Rangers have no wish or desire to tell their fans to stop singing these songs but they have to because of the consequences. In that sense, can you blame Rangers fans for thinking there is mixed signals? Let’s be honest, Rangers fans don’t think there is anything wrong with the songs they sing, it is part of their tradition, it is why they love their club and it is what drives their superiority complex over others.

That is not to say its right and that anyone outside of Ibrox agrees with their beliefs but it is a hard one for Rangers to balance out.

The club is continually battered by their own fans for not fighting for their traditions and sticking up for the supporters but equally, the club has made numerous pleas to their supporters about singing songs, the majority of which have been unheeded.

There was a spell when these songs dropped out of contention at Ibrox but if anything, they are back with a vengeance as Rangers fans put on an act of defiance to those who oppose their team.

It will be interesting to see what sort of case Rangers put forward if these charges are labelled against them. It may be best if they drop the “whataboutery” defence and actually look for ways they can show they have made real changes and can continue to make in-roads into removing these songs from the Rangers fans song-book.

It will also be interesting to see if this is anything more than paper talk…no doubt more will come out in the following days and weeks.

The early tea-time kick-off would have been out of the ordinary for most fans but in the end, it gave Rangers fans more of the evening to enjoy returning to the top of the league. St Johnstone will look back and rue the part they played in their own downfall but it’s results that matter and Rangers can be content with their early evening’s work.

It was looking as though it was going to be a tricky evening for the champions but they were given a massive boost when Danny Grainger had an aberration. His woefully short backpass was intercepted by Kyle Lafferty who easily opened the scoring. Grainger could possibly have won St Johnstone a penalty earlier in the game when he was tripped by Wylde but the St Johnstone defender gave a horror performance over the course of the game and he could have been substituted earlier.

Rangers took control for the rest of the first half and hit the post through Davie Weir, although a foul had already been given. Aside from that, Nikica Jelavic looked wasteful in front of goal but there wasn’t much between the teams.

St Johnstone stepped it up a gear in the second and Rangers had Alan McGregor to thank for keeping them in front with two smart saves. Just when it looked as though the game was building up to a grand stand finish, Rangers swept up the park and good play between Naismith and Jelavic saw the Scottish internationalist finish well…and finish the game.

The 2-0 win sees Rangers on top of the league, a point ahead of Celtic but having played a game extra. The champions also have an inferior goal difference of 7 at the current moment. St Johnstone’s hopes of a top six finish are now virtually extinct, lying 6 points behind Motherwell with 2 games to play and having a goal difference which is inferior by 10.

The pitch at McDiarmid Park was pretty rough and although it is too late for St Johnstone to do much about it for this season, it can only be hoped that they and many of the other SPL teams who have inferior parks do something about it for next season. With the continual mucking about of supporters, the least clubs can do is ensure they have a half decent surface for games to be played on.

All Rangers eyes turn to the internet for further updates about the takeover and then to Celtic Park to see if Hibs can do them a favour and keep them on top of the league tomorrow night.

It shows you how tight some things are

The past few days have seen many Rangers fans concerned about the figures and notes in the margins of the profit and loss columns but the return to on field action showed how close the margins between winning and losing can be.

Rangers were in the lead twice against Dundee United only for the Arabs to equalise on both occasions with the game level going into the dying seconds. Walter Smith has been criticised and commended for a cautious approach at times but with the home side having a corner, everyone for Rangers bar McGregor was camped high in the United half.

If Steven Whittaker’s effort had been a little bit lower, the home fans would have been celebrating their second home league late winner in a row and Ibrox would have been bouncing to the chant of “that’s why we’re champions”. As it was, one rebound off the bar and then some slack play found the ball being released to David Goodwillie who had half the field to pretty much himself as he broke free on McGregor.

Special mention must go to Craig Conway for busting a gut to get alongside Goodwillie as he helped the striker find the net.

The starting position of Alan McGregor was slightly off centre but with two United men bearing down on him, he was left virtually helpless trying to cover both situations. A superb feint by Goodwillie caused McGregor to shift to his right for a split second which opened up a bigger gap, which the United striker duly took advantage of.

It doesn’t quite make up for the disappointing Cup exit but no doubt the United fans will be a lot happier with their lot today.

In one sense the loss doesn’t change anything for Rangers, the destiny of the league title is still in their hands and if they win every game from here, they will win the league. The loss will have some fans shifting a little bit more nervously though.

Some are wondering why Smith never brought on a sub at any point, even though his options were limited. Others are questioning why every Rangers outfield player was so high up the park although many others were happy to see the team push hard for the winner.

Perhaps Smith could have brought on the 10,000 lb gorilla that Alasdair Johnston spoke of and asked him to sit at the half-way line when Rangers attacked. Its unlikely David Goodwillie would have fancied his chances of a 1 on 1 in that fashion.
