Who gets your vote?

Football clubs need to make money and one way to do so is to have special events where fans pay big money to see their heroes close up in clothes that are different from a football kit. There will be food and drink and some chat but really it’s all about being close to the club.

A popular event along these lines is the player of the year event but sometimes, the event may not seem as exciting as it could have been. Take the forthcoming Celtic Player of the Year event.

The funniest or most worrying thing was when you looked at the Celtic website article promoting the event, they used three player pictures to promote the event. The players were:

Robbie Keane

Paddy McCourt

Marc Antoine Fortune

Robbie Keane, who signed in February.

Paddy McCourt, who has produced some entertaining cameos and vignettes but no great substance.

And Marc Antoine Fortune, who we must admit, is probably in with a shout. The media had written the boy off because of a bad first half against Dynamo Moscow and the Rangers fans like to bray about “Costa” even though he is head and shoulders above Lafferty but Fortune has improved greatly as the season has progressed. Don’t forget he picked up an injury in August which ruled him out for a while.

Those who just want to see a striker in the box will never warm to him but those who get football as being the team game can appreciate a lot of work that Fortune has put in this season.

Whether that is the work this Celtic team needs now or whether Fortune has the team-mates to capitalise on his hard work is a different matter but that is not the players fault.

There is an absolute paucity of notable candidates when it comes to selecting a stand-out Celtic player from the season, which maybe goes some way to suggesting this Player of the Year event may not be the highlight of the Celtic calendar.

Not so at Rangers where Weir, Boyd, Bougherra, McDonald, Conroy and Steven Davis will all think they have a chance of taking the award for the biggest influence on the park.

The other categories up for grabs are:
Young Player of the Year
Goal of the Season
There will also be awards to the Players Player and Top Goalscorer.

The event takes place on the 18th of April.

Yes, they are handing out a top goalscorer award on the 18th of April.

If Celtic make it to the Cup final, they will playing until the 15th of May. Okay, they may not score any goals between the 18th of April and the end of the season but we wouldn’t be putting any money on that.

Ridiculous!

Still, a good night will likely be had by all and if you enjoy this sort of thing, tickets are freely available.

We’ll maybe wait until the end of the season before we start dishing out our plaudits though.
