Yes, results could have been better in the past week but not everything is bleak for Rangers.

So if you thought the Champions League campaign was a disappointment or even that WeKnowsSFA was a bit harsh in their Sunday articles, look to the future.

One of the bright spots of the season so far has been the emergence of Danny Wilson. Wilson has covered at the back in the past few months and he has enabled Walter Smith to leave Madjid Bougherra out of his team without having any concerns or major problems.

If the Algerian stopper exits in January, Rangers fans will at least feel as though Wilson will provide sufficient cover which will be adequate for the SPL.

The age difference between the two key centre halfs may be akin to that from a bad ITV sitcom but that won’t worry any Rangers fan if they continue as they have started.

Wilson is following on from John Fleck, who burst on to the scene so brightly last year. He has flitted in and out of the first team squad but it can be easy to forget how young Fleck is. There is a lot of pressure and expectation on a boy at an age when his peers are likely to be out drinking and smoking, so consistency is not always the most important thing at that age.

Fleck has shown in recent weeks though that he is a key member of the first team squad and if some players are shipped out in January, Fleck is likely to stand up and take more responsibility.

Who is next?
Walter Smith has announced that he expects Jamie Ness to be the next player to roll off the Murray Park conveyor belt. A term that was used by the media in gushing terms only to be stolen by fans of other teams to use in a derogatory manner may just be coming round again.

Ness is a midfielder and Smith believes that the 18 year old will be an excellent player.

“He’s an athletic boy and can play. Jamie has been unfortunate with injuries so he’s only now getting to the stage where he has had fairly consistent football.”

“Hopefully within the next few weeks we will get a view of him.”

“The biggest worry for these young players is the hype that surrounds them.”

“People come in saying they want to sign them here, there and everywhere.”

“It would be beneficial to let these lads get on with their football. Everybody else gets carried away but I am placed firmly in charge of them.”

“At the moment they are getting what I think is the proper introduction to life at a club like Rangers. They will not be overplayed.

The financial concerns are well stated but if a number of talented youngsters can progress to the first team, the fans may not notice the loss of big names. In fact, Rangers fans love nothing more than seeing genuine true blue fans bursting onto the scene, which may give a bit of pride back to the club.

Yes, it has been a bad week for Rangers and good news is not really readily available. However, it is important to keep everything in balance and the future may hold a few surprises and treats for the Rangers faithful.

Who is your favourite graduate of the Rangers youth team?
