Last season seems so long ago now but you may recall one of the features WeKnowSFA ran was an interview with local musicians where we tried to combine their love of football and music. First in our firing line was Graeme Black from the rather excellent The State Broadcasters.

Graeme is a Falkirk fan and shared his viewpoints on the highs and lows of being a Bairn. With Steven Pressley’s team going down in the final day shoot-out with Kilmarnock, things have been a little bit quiet from Graeme…although there was the noticeable chirp of joy from a Bairns fan when Hearts were humbled out of the League Cup by Falkirk.

As well as giving us his views on football, Graeme did a great turn for our friends at the Cold Blooded Clarity music site, who organised a charity gig back in June. With the proceeds going to the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, the event raised over £2,500, which was a phenomenal tally and everyone involved in the event should be proud of their hard work.

Graeme is taking part in a 10K run on October 17th at Hopestoun House in aid of Cancer Research UK. If you want to read more about the charity and maybe even give Graeme a helping hand on his way, check out the charity page:

Run10K page – Graeme Black

We’ll be backing Graeme on this very worthwhile cause and if you feel like doing the same, it would be very welcomed and appreciated.

We still don’t rate Steven Pressley though…..

You may have read us talking about our friends at Cold Blooded Clarity and their recent charity night and raffle. They were raising funds for The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and so far, they have raised an outstanding £2,300!

Wow…that’s great but they are still looking to raise further funds.

The raffle was such a success because some very generous companies and friends chipped in with gifts and a few days before the event, the guys were offered a fantastic raffle prize. So good, they decided they would hold it back and use it on its own at a later date.

As you can see below, it is a painting featuring Jimmy ‘Jinky’ Johnstone on the ball against Rangers whilst Bobby Lennox looks on.

It is said to have hung in Jock Stein’s office for a while so if anyone has any facts or anecdotes about it, that would be fantastic.

Basically, in order to know as much about the painting and gather as much knowledge about it, they’ve asked us to help them out. Therefore, if anyone knows anything about it, please comment about the bottom of the page.

We’ve ascertained that the painting is of a League Cup tie between the two Glasgow giants in 1968, with Celtic triumphing 1-0.

So we know when the action took place….it would be good to know anything more about the painting, its origins or where it was held.

Our friends at Cold Blooded Clarity are not sure whether to raffle the picture or auction it – there are positive and negative elements to both – has anyone got any ideas?

This is a close-up of the artists’ signature, if anyone has any info about the artist:

So….if you’ve got any info, please speak up and help us help the Cold Blooded Clarity team to raise even more money for an absolutely brilliant cause.

We always like to see teams get involved with charitable projects as it is good to see them give something back from time to time. We are not so precious that we forget clubs are corporate businesses these days but doing a little extra to help others should be congratulated. Rangers announced a few weeks ago about their Champions Walk scheme but some more details have just been released.

The Rangers Charity Foundation has announced that the event will take place in Ibrox Stadium on Sunday the 8th of August 2010. This is scheduled to be the weekend before the start of the SPL season so there should be no worries about fixture clashes at this point.

<img src="http://footballsfootball.com/WeknowSFA/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Ad1.jpg" alt="WeKnowSFA - World Cup T-Shirts - Anybody But England" title="WeKnowSFA - World Cup T-Shirts - Anybody But England"" width="450" height="300" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1316" />

Tying in with the fact that Rangers clinched their 53rd title last season, the walk will encompass 5.3km. This will see fans walking around the perimeter of the Ibrox pitch 53 times but there shouldn’t be too many concerns about the view becoming a bit boring.
In the middle of the Ibrox pitch will be the SPL trophy and surely no football fan could ever get sick of seeing that on their home turf?

Events like this are a great way for people to get involved in raising money for charity when they probably wouldn’t do so otherwise so it will hopefully be well supported and received. Also, if it helps some fans get some exercise whilst raising money for a good cause, it would take a churlish person to look for faults in this.
Is your club organising a charity event this summer? If so, let us know and we’ll do our best to promote the effort.

On that note, our friends at Cold Blooded Clarity are organising a charity gig event this Thursday (10th June) at The Admiral Bar in Glasgow. Three great bands for a fiver and a rock n raffle! More details can be found at this website: Cold Blooded Clarity

Thistle’s charity single that is.

If you remember back to the early days of the 2000s, you’ll recall that Valencia were one of the top teams in Europe and one of their key players was Gaizka Mendieta. The midfielder used to boss games with impunity and he made a big impression on us in those years.

He later went to Middlesbrough and although he never made an impact there in a football sense, we actually had a greater respect for him. This is due to the fact that a lot of stories came out about his private life and for once, they were of a positive nature.

It turns out that Medieta is a huge music fan and he cites The Velvet Underground as his favourite band! That’s good enough for us and it turns out that whilst in England, Medieta would write music reports of the English music scene for journals back in France.

Given that most footballers have a terrible taste in music, the fact that Mendieta could play well and loves The Velvet Underground made him one of our favourites.

So what this got to do with Scottish football?

Partick Thistle are getting behind a charity single called ‘T.H.I.S.T.L.E’ with the proceeds from the track going to community initiatives and local cancer charities. Mendieta was only too happy to help out with the promotion of the single and other celebrities are lined up to aid the promotional push this week.

You should be able to find it on iTunes from today and in Fopp on Byres Road from Wednesday.

The song, as you may have guessed, takes its cue from the Tammy Wynette classic, although of course, the Billy Connolly reimagining of ‘D.I.V.O.R.C.E’ is going to come to mind as well. It’s for a good cause so check it out. It’s definitely of limited appeal but we’re happy to push the track on, so give it a listen.

Whilst we are on the topic of cancer charities, our friends at the Cold Blooded Clarity site are putting on their first charity gig. It’s in aid of The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, which is a cause that is very dear to their, and many other peoples hearts.

The gig will be held on Thursday 10th June, it costs £5 to enter and as well as two bands and dj’s, there is a rock n roll raffle being held for the event. Please visit the site for more details – Cold Blooded Charity.

So there you go, two opportunities to help out local cancer charities and we heartily endorse both. The fact that 1 in 3 Scottish people will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime means it should never be too far from home for anyone.
You could say that Celtic have been doing a lot of charitable work all season. They’ve been dishing out points and goals to all and sundry this season and they have been doing a lot to preserve the financial wellbeing of their city neighbours Rangers.

Wonderful work from a club that was set up with charitable intentions!

Of course, their fans haven’t been too impressed with that style of charity work but the latest move from Celtic should be viewed as a positive issue.

Oxfam Scotland and Celtic webpage

Poverty in Africa has been a cause that the world has been aware of for the past few decades and although great work has been done, the situation is still pretty dire for many. The World Cup in South Africa will hopefully show the great elements of the game and the continent but Africa is huge and there will be many areas not on the radar this summer.

Any Celtic fan going along to the game against Dundee United should be aware that there will be an Oxfam van parked up beside the Celtic superstore where donations can be dropped in for sale at Oxfam shops. As you would expect, books, cds and clothes will be gratefully accepted.

They probably won’t take Lee Naylor though…sorry hoops fans.

It is a good step and it will hopefully help some people be more aware of the situation and will get a few people acting to assist.

Okay, it is probably a bad day if some people need a football team to tell there that is wrong in the world and to encourage them to help out but every little helps and again, it should be viewed as a positive thing.
