Steven Davis was clearly the top man at Rangers

Hard to argue with midfielders awards

Whilst there was some bemusement at Robbie Keane lifting the Celtic Player of the Year Award, there was no such confusion at the Rangers bash. Steven Davis walked away with not only the Player of the Year Award but also the Players Player award.

The goals of Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller have grabbed points and headlines but the Northern Irish international has been the driving force behind Rangers this season. From an early point in the campaign, Davis has led the way with assists for the SPL Champions and has recently chipped in with a few goals.

The loss of Barry Ferguson in the summer and Pedro Mendes for most of the first half of the campaign and then through his sale to Sporting Lisbon has not been noticed by the Ibrox faithful.

When you add in the fact that Kevin Thomson has been unavailable for much of the season, as has Maurice Edu, and Lee McCulloch has flitted in and out of the team and been deployed in various positions when selected, the consistency of Davis is even more noteworthy.

The player himself will tell you that individual awards mean nothing compared to the trophies won by the team but with Rangers being miles ahead of the domestic pack, being hailed as the team’s best player is high praise for Steven Davis and praise that is fully deserved.

Would you disagree with the award for Davis?

Do you think that Davie Weir was perhaps due of greater recognition? Should the goals of Kenny Miller or Kris Boyd have grabbed them the award? Perhaps the attacking full-back Steven Whittaker or the reliable full-back Sasa Papac could have been recognised as the top man in blue?

We’ve said that we think Davis was a worthy winner but what do you think?

Davis is most definitely the best player at Rangers. Had we seen more of him in his natural role of central midfield, I honestly think we could have won more games, more easily. But heh who am I to question Walter Smith domestic record!

Special mention to Davie Weir who has played every minute of every game that Rangers have played this season, an incredible feat for a man who is now 40 years old.

Boyd had a brilliant first half to the campaign, but injury and transfer talk have now turned his head to other things. Make no mistake he will be away in the summer to Birmingham where I wish him well, he will most certainly need it. Although £1M per season on a 3 1/2 year deal will set the fella up for the rest of his life, so who am I or anyone else to deny him his big payday and chance at the big time in England?

Kenny Miller, quite simply phenomenal for us this season. After a good first season back when he silenced most of his critics, he has followed it up with 20 goals already and make us tick when we go forward. I remember sitting at Ibrox and singing ‘You can stick your Kenny Miller Up Your Arse’ I have had to eat copious amounts of humble pie since as he has proved, pound for pound, one of Smiths best signings since coming back to the club.

However in the face of adversity, I would have to nominate the team for player of the year, quite simply they play as one, whatever the selection and formation and proved that they are number domestically, something that I just simply couldn’t see us doing this year after the Lloyds/Murray debacle of the park.

    53 and counting ………

Let the others come after us

I think Davis is a tremendous little player, just gets on and does his job, better than anyone else, never whinges or complains, doesnt have to run about acting like a little hard man, unlike others i could mention

Think there was some stat not so long ago that he had set up almost half of the goals rangers had scored, scoring 5 or 6 himself

well deserved awards for the wee man, Writers and players should ensure he gets to add to these awards if there is any justice
