Yes, bigger than the gubbing of Celtic

St Mirren fans will long remember the evening where they battered Celtic 4-0 in a match that saw Tony Mowbray lose his job the following day. However, the home victory over Kilmarnock may just be the biggest win of the Paisley club’s season.

Forget that 4-0 trouncing of Celtic.
Forget the League Cup semi-final win over Hearts.

With Falkirk losing at home to Hamilton Academicals and Kilmarnock being the team losing in Paisley, the Buddies went a long way to guaranteeing their SPL survival. At times like this, it takes bottle as much as skill and talent, and this was the deciding factor for St Mirren, with Andy Dorman getting the goal that broke the deadlock.

St Mirren now have two away games on the trot and the next match, away to Falkirk, will be another hugely important match. Today’s win gives the Buddies a bit of breathing space and a win will see the Paisley side safe for another season.

It’s one of they things at the bottom of the league, every game is huge and although it is crucial to win games, winning one only gives you a bit of respite. When the Buddies hit the training ground at the start of the week, the hard work begins again but the players should have an extra spring in their step.

Don’t forget that St Mirren know the final day of the season will see Falkirk and Kilmarnock play each other so if the Buddies have more by the end of the penultimate fixtures, their safety will be assured because it would be impossible for both clubs to overhaul them.

So…..a big win but the work starts again this week for St Mirren. That said, life will be so much easier than it would have been had Killie lost.
