Not even SPL safety can buck Aberdeens ideas up

Self-destruct mode still very much alive

Just when Aberdeen fans thought it was safe to read the Sunday newspapers again, their club hits the self-destruct button once again. A 1-0 lead in Perth against a St Johnstone side who has offered little still found the Dons lacking at the death.

Mark McGhee will be livid at the latest stumble from his team, especially when all of the pressure had been lifted. The 1-0 win over Falkirk last weekend ensured that Aberdeen could not be dragged into the relegation dog-fight and did much to lighten the tone and mood at Pittodrie.

This game could have been the first pre-season game for McGhee to get his team fired up for next season. Everyone knows that Aberdeen have to impress and improve next season and a lead at half time thanks to Steven McLean’s predatory instincts was well deserved.

However, just when the clock was ticking down and Mark McGhee looked suitably comfortable on the touch-line, Aberdeen failed to deal with a set-piece and gave the home side the chance to level the game.

All credit to St Johnstone. You would imagine their heads would be down after just narrowly missing out on the top six. The Perth side put in a fantastic fight to take Hearts all the way but in the end, it was just too much for them to overhaul.

A late leveller at home last weekend against St Mirren has been followed up today with what may be deemed as a cruel own goal (for Aberdeen fans) which sees St Johnstone pick up another point and keep Aberdeen behind Hamilton in the bottom half of the table.

Although the opportunity to build for next season is available, can you blame players for not rising to the task. It is unfair on the paying punters to be let down yet again…but the sooner the season ends, the players can go away, recharge and think about how they can improve for a better campaign next year.

Well, it couldn’t get much worse. Here’s hoping a travelling circus takes our overpaid clowns away to pastures far, far away.
