Riordan wants his goal.

by WeKnowSFA

No, that’s not rhyming slang.

Hibernian striker Derek Riordan has been left raging after his opening strike against Falkirk has been credited as an own goal. The striker feels this is the second time this has happened to him this season.

The Hibs fan favourite is currently stuck on six goals even though in his mind he has buried eight goals. That is not due to Riordan having problems with counting but because of the way the arbitrary goals panel likes to make themselves look important.

Riordan makes a fair point in saying that this type of thing happens week in, week out;

“I’ve seen other players score similar goals to mine this season and they have not been accredited as OGs.

If all deflections were listed as own goals, Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard would have the scoring record of Marc Antoine Fortune rather than his very impressive haul.

It just goes to show that the majority of what footballers say is a lot of rubbish. A post match interview with any goalscorer will see them saying they are just pleased to have helped the team. In reality, they are all pushing for personal glory.

In that respect, it is refreshing to see some honesty from Riordan, with the admission that he is desperate to get goals. Of course, it may not be honesty but something else as Riordan can’t claim to be the sharpest studs on the football boot.

The player moaned;

“It’s the second time that has happened to me this season and I’m really unhappy because nobody has explained the rules to me.”

They probably have Derek and maybe you just never understood them?

Personal pride and meeting achievements are genuine reasons why strikers want as many goals as possible but money is probably the driving influence. If Riordan’s agent has done his job, his client will have a clause in his contract earning him a bonus for a certain amount of goals.

This will be why Riordan has his agent scampering around checking the laws for this sort of thing;

“That’s why I’ve asked my agent to at least check out the rules to clarify exactly what constitutes an own goal.”

Of course, what about the fans who put money on Riordan getting the first goal? Thankfully, Riordan got the second goal of the game as well but if someone else scored it, it could have led to a few arguments and punters losing money!

So, football fans, do you care who gets the goal or do you think Deeks has a valid argument?
