Rangers: Muir Out – A Genuine Mistake?
Anger, Grievances, Money
The Rangers AGM is due to take place this week and it is likely to be a fiery affair.
There will be a lot of topics to discuss but the presence and future of Donald Muir is likely to be one of the major issues arising from the event.
Muir was appointed to the Ibrox board in October and brought with him a history of turning around companies that were experiencing great financial difficulties. This may be seen by some quarters as a positive move by the Rangers board to improve their current situation.
Unsurprisingly though, it has been seen as a negative matter for many fans and a sign that the bank are running the club.
Okay, Walter Smith said this as well but when it comes from Walter, a good Rangers man, its okay, its a bit different when its someone the public are unsure of.
There have been some concerted efforts to oppose Muir’s place on the Board and he could potentially be voted off.
Those who are against Muir believe the bank is lumping the club in with Sir David Murray’s larger level of debt and are in fact, holding the club to ransom in order to keep control of the money Murray and his portfolio holds.
There is no doubt that the Murray International companies are in a very treacherous position but to think that all is well in the Rangers camp and the club are being harshly treated is the sort of madness that has created the current state of affairs.
If the vote goes against Muir and he is a Lloyds man, how will the bank react?
Muir may well be the man keeping the bank from the door and convincing them the club should carry on as normal whilst a buyer can be found.
The fact that no credible buyer has stepped forward yet should be a sign of concern for all at Ibrox and now is not the time for panic or for antagonising the bank.
When Celtic’s old Board was ousted in the 1990s, it was a simpler affair. They were bumbling fools, they had the clubs interest in mind (although possibly not as high as their own self interest) but were massively out of their depth.
This left plenty of space and potential for businessmen to come in and make a profit from running the club, which was shown by the assorted groups that were interested in buying the club.
Fergus McCann was the eventual winner and McCann profited but he also saved the club and turned them around. Due to outsourcing and cost cutting, the same potential for profit does not exist at Ibrox at the moment, which makes it a more difficult affair to process.
Muir may go or at least, displeasure may be shown at his presence but whilst Dave King remains in hiding and Graham Duffy appears to offer no more than pie in the sky dreams, it may be best to not rock the boat further.
Stormy times but will there eventually be blue skies at Ibrox?

smith, mccoist, durrant, mcdowall, bain and murray OUT
Rangers need RID of the anti football and negativity murray and bain brings to the club.
Billy Davies in
the board deserve every bit of criticism, how david murray has got away with running us like a provincial club, i will never know, hes a disgrace.
turnover, over £40m every year yet we still find a place for mcculloch, miller and lafferty in our team!!?? its very poor and not good enough.
Thanks Peter, clearly this is an issue that is causing you concern.
Billy Davies is a good shout for Rangers boss. He did a tremendous job at Derby, in fact, he was his own worst enemy, getting them promotion too soon. He looks like he doing a good job at Forest as well.
Knowing Billy’s background, he’d love a crack at managing Rangers and has proven he can work within a budget.
Walter Smith said on SSN that “by some miracle of accounting, we don’t have to sell anyone in January.” Make of that what you will, but to answer your post…
Let them oust Muir, (as if they could) and they can look forward to Seamus O’Flaherty from the Tough Accounting division of Lloyds TSB being appointed in his place instead!
Seriously though, as you compare their situation with Celtic’s meltdown. It is worth noting that Celtic’s immediate plunge into crisis was created by the Bank of Scotland withdrawing their support and asking for their entire investment and overdraft back immediately.
Rangers current bankers have stated that they are pleased with Muir being appointed at Ibrox and continue to operate a normal relationship. In my opinion, they would do well to continue to keep the bank pleased.
thanks WNSFA, yes it is very concerning, i dont swallow the scaremongering within the press, i know there is problems, but never as bad as non rangers minded people will try have us believe, i firmly believe under ambitious, intellgent people in charge, Rangers FC will thrive, i really hope Walter and his backroom pals dont get an extension to their current deal.
People(Murray and Bain) have to pay for the massive gross mismanagement of the club over last 9 years, if Mr Muir can help shake some people up and get rid of non contributers to the clubs cause, then so be it, im all for that. On topic, i have absolutely no problems with Mr Muir having a say on how to fix “Murrays Mess”, i just hope he gets the whole support of the Rangers fans.
What on earth has David Murray done with the last 9 years turnover(including millions upon millions from our fans) of Rangers FC? Every year its “we’re in a transition period”, now were in “financial mess” and now we “cant even buy players” from within the SPL or championship!! Its a disgraceful situation and Mr Murray along with his downsizing pal Bain have to go very soon. PLEASE.
If i was Mr Muir, i wouldnt want to punt all our assets, that would be so silly and wrong, i would want high earners like miller, beasley, mcculloch etc etc off the wage bill ASAP, players we could easily do without. velickas, laffertys, stevie smiths etc etc…far too many passengers at Ibrox from the team on pitch to board room.
One of the concerns must be that one thing Murray has done is stripped a lot of the revenue streams from the club. Azure catering, ticket services and many other things which would help bring income to a club have all been hived off to firms operated by Murray or associates of him. That needs to be the concern.
Due to media agenda’s, it is hard to gather what is the real situation with Rangers. Some fans will believe some stories, other believe the opposite which could leave the AGM as a rather feisty affair.
The Rangers first team squad of regular players is quite trim but there still appears to be players who never feature. Okay, Velicka suffered an injury days after he went out on loan but is Stevie Smith fit? If so, he never appears to feature and would not be a player that would be greatly missed.
If funds need to be raised, would it be better to sell one or high top quality stars for a large sum or a number of the lower rated stars for a collective sum?
