Rangers and Celtic unsponsored kits: T on The Park?

by WeKnowSFA

What’s your take on the T kits?

Well, it is T in the Park time yet again and with Tennent’s having ditched their backing of the national team to get behind Celtic and Rangers, what better time to consider the implications again of their sponsorship?

It has came into focus for us this week as a friend of the site pre-ordered the new Celtic home, nothing strange about that. Some of our friends are already wearing their new Rangers home kit and probably waiting on the red and white striped away kit or rumoured black Rangers 3rd kit to hit the shops too.

However, what made the pre-ordering of the Celtic home kit a little bit different was the fact that it was pre-ordered without a sponsor on it.

Get this, for a shirt that has less design on it, it’s going to take longer to produce.

Whilst the sponsored home kits will be out mid July, the unsponsored Celtic home kit is not due until around the end of August. Football fans and logic, they don’t always go hand in hand!

(And yes, we understand it’s as much to do with production runs and meeting demand for the main launch. There is also the fact that Tennent’s won’t be too pleased about the fact there are kits being sold without their name emblazoned on it, so a short delay may be some way to appease the clubs new backers.)

Its right that the kids versions of the kits don’t have alcohol sponsors on them, we’re happy with that. Of course, try explaining to a child why their strip is not the exact same as the one their heroes or elder siblings are wearing, that may cause some tears before bedtime.

We do have a drink culture, perhaps even a drink problem in Scotland, so if the absence of the sponsor makes some children question alcohol and its impact, that can only be a good thing. We’re the last people who will say NO ALCOHOL but a focus on alcohol awareness and education is something we can get behind.

So what do you think about adults buying kits without a sponsor?

Do you feel it moves you away from the club and the players? Do you feel it’s pointless because lets face it, you are still wearing a Nike or Umbro branded product? Would you choose to wear a shirt of that type of material and quality if it wasn’t a football short?

They’re all valid points but equally, some people don’t want to walk about advertising an alcohol product, especially one that is as poor as Tennent’s. We’ve all drank it and in some bars, it remains the best choice but if that is the case, get yourself to a different bar.

Some people are hoping that having Tennent’s as a sponsor may lead to a review of drinking alcohol in Scottish stadiums again and we aren’t too sure what to make of that. That may be for another article before the season starts but no doubt it vexes many that they cannot have a drink before the game in the stadium.

So for now…and if you’re not at T being bombarded with Tennents and the big red T everywhere you look….how do you feel about seeing T everywhere this coming season?

We should all have a choice. All football shirts should be sold to the general public WITH or WITHOUT the sponsors on it.
While the clubs involved might make millions from sponsorship, what actually do we get for advertising any particular brand. I for one have no interest in seeing my 7 & 9 yr year old children running around with a Tennents sponsored top.
I think you could take this one step further. As i said earlier, the clubs involved make millions through sponsorship but we the consumer get nothing. If Tennents or any other company want you to wear a kit with their name on it then they should be made to pay you for the advertising, i would suggest a £5 reduction in the cost of the kit.

Your better wating until Jan 2011 when you’ll probably get the kit for £20 anyway. Total rip off of the fans every year.

What you get for the clubs sponsorship deals is cheaper tickets. If the club had no sponsorship deals they’d either have to slash the budget or make it up from the fans.

  • Quagmire…

You don’t have to buy the strips, fans would be up in arms if they didn’t get a new strip every few years.

Fans are turning away as it, couldn’t really increase prices much further.

The budget is being squeezed, finding other revenue streams is crucial for all clubs.

Looks like we will have to sell a shit load of shirts this season to help Walter keep some of our best players. I’ve just seen this article in the Telegraph that says that we can’t offer 8 first team players a new contract even though they are in their final year. They could all leave us next summer for free just like Boyd has just done.

I urge all fellow bears to go out and buy the new Rangers tops to help get the club back where we belong.

You would be as well buying Rangers T-Shirts from the WeKnowSFA shop for all the good buying strips is going to do.

Rangers sold out their strip profits to JJB for 10 years, I think they might only be four or five years into this deal.

Rangers don’t make any extra money if thy sell 1 or 1million strips. Rangers didn’t even receive a bonus from all the strips sold on the lead up to the UEFA cup final in Manchester

Still no leak for the Celtic away strip yet, the only one I’ve seen is this lime green effort above. I very much doubt this is going to be the new Celtic away strip.

Reading alot of Celtic sites, alot of the support resent the O** F*** tag and want no connections between the clubs other than is necessary, playing football.
They’re fed up with the OF tag being dragged out every time the ranjurs support riot somewhere by the laptop loyalists.
They want an end to joint sponsorship deals with ranjurs, and the club knows it. I think given the choice most Celtic supporters would take the unsponsored shirt.
I realise this is a difficult situation, no sponsor wants to alienate either half of the Glasgow Derby, Celtic are defo trying a marketing technique to try and sell as many sponsored shirts as possible.

Peter Lawell admitted at one of this week’s Q&A session that due to lack of success on the park and no guarantee of Champions League football, Celtic had no option but to seek out a parochial sponsor.

Clearly, no reasonable parochial firm in the current climate is going to sponsor one of the Glasgow big two but not the other.

If Celtic fans are unhappy with the joint deal, the clubs failure on the park is a major reason for these deals.

Couldn’t agree more, though I find it ironic that Mr Lawwell is making such a stannce as he and Mr Desmond must shoulder the responsibility for the lack of success on the park after refusing to back Gordon Strachan the season before last and the fiasco that was TM!
Ranjurs tried it twice with independant sponsors being the top team in Scotland during their equaling of Celtics unique first in the world 9 premierships in a row.
The deal they had with McEwans even going to the extent of bar taps emulating a ranjurs taps (pun intended) ended up as alledgedly being a deal McEwans couldn’t get out of quickly enough.
No self respecting Celtic supporter would drink a beer from such a tap, as I’m sure ranjurs supporters would feel the same if the shoe was on the other foot, Peperamis, Eggs Benadict, green straws, green jelly beans, the wee sweet in the middle of an empire biscuit…lol!
They also done it with Walkers Crisps, with wee Sally McCoist heading their TV advertisements, then half way through, realising their mistake brought in, somewhat ironic restrospectfuly, Cheeky Charlie ‘bag of chips’ Nicholas to even things out.
I personally would like to see the end to any joint sponsorship deal with ranjurs, no guilt by association, but I fear that is easier said than done.
