Pride comes before a follow follow.
Rangers fans, look away now!
The rest of Scottish football is going to have a chuckle at the Champions League adventure this season. Dont get us wrong, all of the Scottish teams have badly under performed in Europe this season but cast your mind back to the draw.
“NEW Rangers chairman Alistair Johnston last night backed Walter Smith to blitz a path for Rangers out of the Group of Dull and straight into the last 16 of the Champions League. “
Yes, the scene was set for Rangers to take their place in the knock-out round of the Champions League. Seville would be a tough test but Stuttgart were deemed to be beatable and as for the Romanian team that struggled against Ayr, Morton and Celtic reserves in the pre-season, they would be no match for the Teddy Bears.
Internet message-boards were abuzz with glee at the draw but the surprising thing was the positive reaction in the printed press and within the club itself. You can’t blame fans for being optimistic, that should come naturally but some of the opinions spouted were rather silly.
Johnston also remarked;
“This will still be a challenge. But let’s just say the draw could have been a lot harder on us when you look at the names of some of the clubs we have avoided. “
“It really has given us some rays of sunlight. We are not going to be complacent but it couldn’t have been much better.”
Johnston may have been well received at the Rangers AGM this week but he will be looking to ignore the comments he made back in the summer. Okay, Rangers ended up like Kirk Broadfoot, with egg on their face, but they will have picked up a sizable cheque for their participation in the tournament.
Rangers need to bounce back domestically to ensure their Champions League place will be available next season but can the cash stricken club manage this?
Has this been the worst season for Scottish football in Europe?

How much did Rangers make from tonight’s match?
BBC Scotland mention 3/4s of a million four times in tonight’s Reporting Scotland. Do they also get that when they get beat?
€3 million for qualifying for the group stage, as Jim Bowen would say, that’s safe, its their BFH.
€2.4 million for participating in the Group stage, which works out as €0.4m per match.
A Group stage win is worth €600,000 and a draw is worth €300,000.
As Rangers got beat, their only income from tonight is the one/sixth of the €2.4m, therefore €0.4m.
The XE site equates this to £362,292.89.
The moral of the story is don’t watch BBC Scotland for sport.
