Motherwell give Jim Gannon the Christmas sack

“Not related to results”

Maybe Scottish football is no longer suited to loud and vociferous characters. Jim Gannon has made the headlines a lot in his time in Scotland but none more so than today.

Motherwell have sacked their manager who has been in charge of the Lanarkshire club for half a year.

Motherwell chairman John Boyle issued the following statement on behalf of the club;

“It is deeply regrettable that the board has felt it necessary to part company with the manager at this stage of the season, but we have reached a situation where we felt there was no other option.”

“Generally, results on the field have been satisfactory since Jim Gannon was appointed and the board wishes to make it clear that today’s decision is not related in any way whatsoever to recent results.”

“Over the past couple of months, it has become abundantly clear that the manager was not fully committed to the club and, despite our best efforts, he repeatedly refused to sign a contract.”

If Gannon was as bristly behind the scenes as he has been in public, it is probably no surprise to hear this news.

With Dundee United without a manager as well, this means half of the top six are currently without a boss.

Come next week, Walter Smith will be working without a contract, so that could mean half of the top six clubs do not have a manager with a contract.

However, if Motherwell have concerns about Gannon not signing a contract, why are Rangers so happy to see their manager do the same?

That is a discussion for a later hour though, who will replace Gannon in charge of the Steelmen is of greater concern for Well fans.

Will it be the same names as are in line for the United job or will there possibly be a name for left-field? For instance, could Brian McClair be tempted away from his youth work at Old Trafford to take over the Motherwell job? Would any fan want this?

Well fans, who is your tip for the boss job at Fir Park?
