Mistakes aplenty between Rangers and Dundee United
Makes for an exciting game for fans
An exciting match at Ibrox with a fair few defensive errors and mistakes by both teams led to a high scoring draw. It’s the second 3-3 draw Rangers have had in the Scottish Cup this season and gives them yet another replay.
Steven Whittaker, a key player going forward but not as strong defensively, played a shocking pass inside which allowed United to race free and Shala slid the ball home to silence a less than half full Ibrox stadium.
At a goal down, you still fancy Rangers to get back into it and the home side were putting pressure on the Tangerine defence. It was no surprise to see the scores levelled but it was yet another moment of controversy for Scottish refs.
On first viewing, which of course is the only view Dougie McDonald gets to make a call, it looked as though Pernis pulled down Kenny Miller. Replays showed that the goalkeeper got a touch on the ball which means the decision will be debated over and over.
Kris Boyd buried the penalty and the odds on Rangers having a half-time lead were tumbling.
They did so with another penalty award. There was definite contact on Kris Boyd but if that’s a penalty, there should be 10 in a match. However, going by letter of the law, you could say it was a penalty, which was all the chance McDonald needed to point to the spot. Kris Boyd placed the ball in the opposite corner as Rangers turned the tie around.
It looked to be all over for United as Nacho Novo opened up a two goal lead but Steven Whittaker deflected the ball past McGregor to bring United back into it. With eleven goals this season, Whittaker has been deadly in front of goal but this was one time when he didn’t want to see the net bulge.
United grabbed an equaliser when Kovacevic followed up on Shala’s effort which hit the bar, meaning these two sides need to meet again to see who makes the semi-final.
With Rangers operating at a lower level in the Scottish Cup than they are in the league, the replay could be a tricky test for the SPL champions. However, they are still avoiding defeat and have the ability to rise to the occasion when necessary.
Do you expect Rangers to win the replay?
