McGhee is at Aberdeen…and in his own wee world

by WeKnowSFA

He should maybe keep quiet for a wee while.

What is up with Mark McGhee?

He hasn’t always been so full of hyperbole and rubbish has he? Maybe he has and the worst of it has been glossed over by ourselves but is he losing the plot at Aberdeen? There are signs of him cracking up, so much so that is coming close to the insanity of the “real Jocky Sott”.

Teckle.

You don’t have think too hard to recall comments that would make you raise an eyebrow but McGhee recently outdid himself when he ruled himself out of taking the Celtic job. The same job he was deemed not good enough for last summer but then proceeded to chat about for what seemed like half the season.

Did we miss the recent press conference where McGhee ruled himself out of the jobs at Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Allied Forces team from the movie Escape To Victory? He may as well have done because McGhee won’t be getting they jobs either.

And yet, we find today he is back running his mouth off about how he could easily get a job in England in summer if he needed to. Mark doesn’t think a disastrous season where two embarrassing cup exits and a likely bottom six placing has negatively impacted on his rating as a manager.

If it didn’t Mark it would be worrying as it would suggest that people didn’t rate you highly in the first place.

Having little self-awareness is bad enough in the first place but coming out with these remarks when you should be doing everything in your power to keep the Dons fans onside is just lunacy from McGhee.

The latest step of lunacy in a season littered with them.

Dons fans, can McGhee lift the gloom and bring the good times back?

He was asked by a journalist “would you be interested in the Celtic job”, and he said “no”. That became “he has unrealistic expectations about what his own ability”.

Now, he was asked this morning if he felt he could be sacked, and said (and I quote) “I don’t want to be sacked by Aberdeen. But I’m in the results business and accept clubs act if they see things aren’t going as well as they would like”. He went on to say that he knew he could get a job in England if that were the case. This wasn’t some hollow boast, it was a straight answer to a straight question. Good spin on it though. Congrats.

Cheers Red Thom, happy to help!

“As far as my credentials or how in demand I am, I think – no I don’t think, I know – that if I want a job in England, I can go to England in the summer”

“That’s not an issue for me. Whatever has happened to me this season doesn’t really impact on my options there.”

“Obviously if I had some sort of amazing season at Aberdeen, maybe won the cup or something, it might have taken me slightly higher up in where I could go back down south.”

Some of they lines could be taken as boasting but a lot of it is about perceptions, no doubt about that.

However, McGhee has had a terrible first season at Aberdeen – and to say that it would impact upon how he is viewed is rather foolish. It took Jimmy Calderwood a while to get a new job (on a temporary contract) and they probably never had a season in recent years as poor as McGhee at Aberdeen.

Nothing wrong with having a high opinion of yourself .Personally speaking if i was a manager i would not care what people thought about me,as long as you have belief in yourself & be positive then we all have a chance of success in life.

I think Sidemouth seriously underestimated the job at Aberdeen, Cup competition apart, Calderwood done a marvelous job at Aberdeen and only now are the fans realising this. McGhee had a very good start to his Motherwell career and he was close to getting the Celtic job had the bid for Mowbray failed. I think he spent too much time thinking of what might have been and in turn, negelected his duties with theh Sheep.

Will Aberdeen ever get back to some semblance of glory in Scotland? Third place should be their goal, but they can’t even break into the Top 6 this season? Big changes are needed at that club, maybe now the Celtic bug has gone, Sidemouth might focus on the job in hand?

It’s a fine line though Danny.

Agreed that you need to have confidence, belief, heck..even a bit of arrogance (as long as you can back it up)

However, there is a need for a bit of awareness and keeping the fans on side as well. McGhee has neglected this side of the issue – it’s all well and good for the Special One to have arrogance and a contempt for the opposition but he has the ability and his team got the results to back it up. As McGhee looks up at the top six just about to move out of reach, is it sensible to be bigging himself up that much?

He might be right but sometimes common sense should kick in with comments.
