Mark McGhee has to eat humble pie

No stranger to pies…or outlandish comments

WeKnowSFA - Aberdeen

That Mark McGhee eh? Always good for a comment or quip. With a weekly column in the Sunday Herald, the manager clearly knows how to present himself in the media but he may have bitten off more than he can chew with his latest remarks.

McGhee was talking after Aberdeen’s 1-0 win at Tannadice and with particular reference to the latest sending off for his side. Davide Grassi was sent off after getting involved with Andy Webster and the player then retaliated which led to the Dons seventh red card of the season. McGhee remarked;

“It’s part of the game though – I used to come here and have Paul Hegarty tell me he’d break my leg.”

“But you don’t react. You just bide your time then smash their face in!”

Paul Hegarty was outraged at this slur on his character…although to be fair, it is probably the sort of chat that goes on in football pitches up and down the country. It doesn’t really mean that a player would intend to carry out their threat. However, Hegarty had plenty to say on the subject;

“I am absolutely raging. His comments are disgraceful. I don’t know where he gets that from. I never said anything like that in my life.”

“My track record speaks for itself, I was only sent off once in my career. I’ll be speaking to him in the next day or two.”

“He’s talking 30 years ago, I never ever did anything like that. Maybe he’s losing his marbles. It’s sad that a manager of his standing has stooped to this.”

Mark McGhee offered this apology;

“I apologise if I caused offence to Paul.”

“I only used his name as he was one of the United players I played against regularly and was the first one that came into my head.”

“I accept he never said anything like that to me when we were playing and it was a tongue in cheek remark, a throwaway line. I never meant to cause him any offence and I apologise if I have offended him.”

Obviously it would have been fine if McGhee said it was Dave Narey instead!

Is Hegarty right to be so offended or is it all just a bit silly?
