The magic of the Scottish Cup lives on

by WeKnowSFA

Not bad for a 125 year old tournament

Irvine Meadow are just one of the many beautifully named Scottish junior clubs. The irony is that there is very little that is beautiful in the Scottish junior game.

Some of the clashes in Ayrshire have went down in legend for the violence and conflict but there is no doubt the passion that exists for the Junior game is evident of how much Scotland lives on.

Irvine Meadow made sure that their name is known for footballing reasons by causing a major shock by knocking Arbroath out of the ActiveNation Scottish Cup.

A 1-0 home win, with the goal coming in the first half from Richie Barr, was enough to send the minnows into the draw with the big boys.

Yes, there is the potential for a tie against Celtic, Rangers, Hearts or Hibs for Irvine Meadow. Who knows, perhaps they would prefer an Ayrshire tie against Kilmarnock or Ayr United to add some local steel to the game?

No doubt they will just be delighted to be in the draw but now that they are they are, they may as well dream a little!

The draw for the next round for the Scottish Cup takes place on Monday and WeKnowSFA will be reporting on Monday night with all the latest views and reaction to the draw.

One name who wont be in the draw will be Queen of the South, beaten finalist in the 2007/08 season. A 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Airdrie United has left the Queens to focus on the league and their push to the SPL.

If your team is in the Cup draw, who do you want to face?

In my opinion from talking to locals Irvine Meado aka The Medda would fancy their chances against any team outside the top two divisions at home, Meadow pay better wages than the bottom two SFL divisions and probably get better crowds than any of them.
However much as that may let them into the next round the ideal tie would be Rangers, Celtic or Kilmarnock away. Any of those would ensure a bumper pay day for the club.

    Thanks Edward.

I think its fair to say that a lot of Junior teams could ruffle up a few teams in the bottom leagues in Scotland.

There is an argument that a pyramid system should be in place for Scotland but I think a lot of the Junior clubs are happy with their lot.

Entrance into the SFL requires a lot of box-ticking which may drain many of the Juniors of their financial advantage at the moment.

The decision to let them into the Scottish Cup has been a great idea. Maybe the Meadow will fancy putting out a small league team and then take a crack at one of the big two?

I grew up close to where Pollok Juniors played, so I’ve got a soft spot for them but its good to see so many of the Juniors doing well.

Lets face it, the Junior Scottish Cup is sponsored by Emirates….the actual Scottish Cup is sponsored by ActiveNation!!
