Would a Lafferty exit justify more in for Rangers?

With the clock ticking towards the close of the transfer window, the next day is looking as though it will be a bit manic for a few clubs.

Walter Smith has given Rangers fans optimism that there may be another new player in at Ibrox and we certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Rangers picking up someone, even on loan.

The rumour mill today has been brimming with the names of Jermaine Jenas or Alan Hutton and we think the full-back would be the far more likely of the two. The Rangers backline isn’t that bad and we can’t imagine it will be the immediate place that Walter Smith would want to strengthen but hey, thats what people are saying.

However, you know what people are like…..

Due to his contract situation, there has been speculation about the future of Kenny Miller and whether he would be looking to sign a new deal or move off. A few clubs, notably Birmingham and West Bromwhich Albion, have been quoted as having an interest in Miller but Rangers fans would be vexed at losing a player that has started the season in fine form.

5 goals in three league games, all of them being the difference between a win and a draw sees Miller’s goals directly responsible for 6 points already this season, which is the sort of thing that wins titles. We were of the opinion that Miller would be for the exit door this window but the likelihood of that appears to be diminishing.

Which is why the rumours about Lafferty being tracked by a number of clubs could provide a more attractive way for Rangers to lighten their wage bill and their abundance of strikers. The forward has caused controversy at the start of this season with a red card at Easter Road and it may be that moving him on may be the best for all parties.

Rangers are well catered for in the goalkeeping department, have a sturdy defence, have decent options up front but may well benefit from an additional defensive midfielder.

Rangers fans, are you looking for a new recruit before the window shuts?

    Guys

I really think we are 3 players short, Webster is constantly injured, we need cover at Centre Half, we need a left back and we need a strong central midfielder to help out Davis, somebody like Kevin thomson perhaps (!!)

Cant see anyone being stupid enough to take on Lafferty, even if there was a club out there who would make such a crazy move I do not belive we would bring anyone else in.

We need 3 players, I would be mightly shocked if we see 1 in before tomorrow evening, just do not see it happening

Think the squad stands at 16 players who would feature in the first team thus meaning that 9 players will have to be elevated from the youth ranks to meet the 25 required from Uefa later this week. We can certainly do with at least one more player and I agree, it’s most likely a loan deal that will suit some of the big Premiership sides to have off the wage bill if they don’t fit the criteria for their own 25 man squads. Either player you mention would have the juices flowing but I think neither will happen to be honest.

As for big Kyle, the current whipping boy of the SPL and indeed in many parts of the Rangers support as well. I think he has been unfairly targeted by the media for issues surrounding non football matters, but thats part and parcel I suppose of the goldfish mentality that surrounds the big two, you sell papers and especially if you are as silly and naive as Lafferty has been so far. No one can excuse his antics against Mulgrew last year but the harsh way in which he got the red this season probably stems from what has went on before him. Playing wise (bit Charlie Nick there!) he has had spells of brilliance, two winning goals to clinch two SPL titles in successive seasons and he has a clinical way of finishing that sadly hasn’t been seen often enough, he can’t help that Rangers paid £3M for him or indeed that he never seems to get a chance as a striker which is his natural position, that said he has to improve, I doubt anyone will take a punt on him this late in the window, however Blackpool might just be the dark horse, you never know. Certainly not done a previous Ibrox whipping boy any harm has it?

  • they are all a bunch of wankers if you ask me just get rde of rangers they are shit

Rangers have enough flexibility in their squad to have other players that can be drafted in to play at centre back (McCulloch, Broadfoot) that will do a job in the SPL but they are likely to be robbing Peter to pay (play) Paul out of their main position. An extra centre half may allow them to play a midfielder in their more natural performance but a defensive midfielder would be a major inclusion straight to the first team.

We are tending to think that Rangers will bring in someone before the window shuts but fair enough Scooter, it wouldn’t be a massive shock if it didn’t happen.

Rangers remain one or two suspensions or injuries away from a crisis….but what team isnt?

    Thanks for your comments joseph

6 trophies out of last 9 in Scotland, 2 back to back league wins would suggest we are better than some others

    Your input is invaluable

    Dear oh dear Joseph.

joseph you seem to be a well educated individual . you know what was shite was a certain team in hoops last thursday in holland but it really amused me lol it was simply the best.

  • The chances ov walter letting lafferty go on loan is absolutely zero it’s never going to happen when we have such a small squad maybe if a player on return just maybe but if laff goes walter will want and need hard cash straight away to recoup the transer fee laid out and Joseph u sir are a clown if u don’t have anything constructive to say then don’t waste or time with ur complete bullshit !

If Lafferty did go then they have to give Miller a better deal, even if another 1 year on his contract at same wages. Talk this morning of Velicka going to Killie too. In that case, if both went, we would need someone else in as cover.

Defensively we need a left-back. I like Papac but he’s not a left-back and when you play 1 up front (ie in Europe) you need help from wing-backs to mount attacks. Remember he is a centre-half by trade. I’d have him in there as cover or 1st choice partner for Boogie/Weir/Webster with a new 1st choice left back.

Midfield, give Edu a chance or McCulloch if a more physical presence is needed (assuming he can stay on the pitch).

  • Quagmire

Lafferty stays and Rangers sign an Aberdeen left back as cover for Papac, Velicka heads to the sheep pen as part of the same season long loan deal.

One of the most damp squibs of a last day transfer window for a long time.

As Scooter alluded to, unfortunately noone else is dumb enough to offer Lafferty a contract. I’d be happy to see him in another league where Big Kyle of keech can maim and dive as much as he wants without impacting the SPL (its not just Celtic that have suffered his cheating), but there you go.

At least the refs are wising up a little to his antics. Let’s make no mistake, it’s Laferty’s style of play that makes him the current “whipping boy” – nothing to do with the media.

BTW when you mention Goldfish mentality do you mean Kyle’s IQ?

  • WeKnowSFA

Surely the phrase is a damp squid?

Anyways, we’ll have some post window thoughts up later….hope you can all contain yourself at the thought of that tantalising prospect.

If Velicka is fit, he can do a turn at Pittodrie but won’t be missed by Rangers – that part of the deal is good for both clubs.

Foster?? We’re still weighing that up – read our hard hitting thoughts later (haha, sorry, we really can’t do this tabloid build up stuff very well!!)

  • jocky bhoy

WeKnowSFA – think you mean squib. Unless you’re getting mixed up with Paul the Octopus?

  • WeKnowSFA

Sorry Jocky, the damp squib / squid joke is from the IT Crowd!
