Killie and Dons follow the Celtic Derry-picker route
The price is right for SPL clubs
Everyone knows that the SPL has been downsizing in recent seasons with many people citing Celtic’s signing policy. Even with three out of the past four titles, Celtic have been shopping in the bargain basement.
The Celtic current first team squad features two players signed directly from Derry City, Paddy McCourt and Niall McGinn.
Whilst neither have managed to become a first team pick as of yet for the Glasgow giants, they have made their mark this season.
McCourt has managed a wonder goal in the SPL and League Cup whereas McGinn has injected life and energy into a number of Celtic performances, as well as featuring for Northern Ireland.
Celtic paid for these players and have sent teams over to play the Irish club but things have changed dramatically in recent weeks.
Given that Derry City have been expelled from the league, their players are keen to make moves and talks are ongoing to determine if the players can move before the opening of the January window. The Irish FA have announced that all Derry City players can leave for free and a number have turned to Ireland to further their career.
Ruaidhri Higgins, a midfielder, has been on trial with Aberdeen in his attempt to win a contract. The financial hardship faced by these players has been summed up neatly by Higgins;
“Due to the situation with Derry, I have gone 12 weeks without wages, and I am now into the 13th week.”
Aside from Aberdeen, Kilmarnock are looking to take advantage of another clubs misfortune.
Killie are no strangers to money worries and have taken Connor Sammon from Derry City, so they have an understanding of what they will be getting.
Sam Morrow, an ex Hibs player who is currently training with Jim Jeffries’ club and Thomas Stewart may find themselves as Kilmarnock players before the end of January.
Although the situation which has led to these players becoming available is distressing for Derry City fans and players, SPL clubs need to consider if there is anyone of value for them?
Would you be happy to see your club pick up a Derry City freebie?
