When will James Sit Down with Celtic?

by WeKnowSFA

Touched by madness? More than a few are.

WeKnowSFA - Celtic

Let’s make something very clear…we don’t like James the band, their music or their smug annoying faces. However, it’s a cheap pun for us to use and that’s always going to make it likely to be used.

The news that the proposed talks between Celtic and David James, said to be taking place today, have been postponed will leave many saying “I told you so.”

There has been a suggestion by some that James, like others before him, was using Celtic to drum up interest from other clubs. We don’t see that as the case, we hardly think the English number one keeper being available on a free transfer needs to drum up more interest in himself.

Some will panic and moan, others will point to the teachings of Don Draper and lecture about how you must always “seal the deal” but they key word, at the moment, is postponed.

Not cancelled, shelved, laughed at or shot down in flames, but postponed.

It appears to be a busy day at Celtic Park with Efrain Juzarez being unveiled at around 1430 and Gary Hooper looking to be on the brink of signing. All this and preparations for Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Braga may have really stretched Neil Lennon’s time.

Also, as David James got married yesterday, he may have one or two other things on his mind.

So….if Celtic can start talks with James on Thursday or Friday, there isn’t any real need for concern but of course, that’s a long time in football.

We’ve had some discussion about David James already and the opinion appears split so not everyone will be dismayed at this delay but with such a public courting of a high profile keeper, how will Lukas Zaluska react to having the spotlight back on him in Wednesday’s crucial match?

Also, what’s more annoying about James (the band)? The music or they t-shirts?

  • First band I ever saw live. Love them. David James? Non-plussed.

  • Are you only slagging of James (The Band) because it’s Gordon Strachan’s favourite Band?

Gordon Strachan is good friends with James front Tim Booth.
Here’s an article from the Independent that Tim Booth talks about his friendship with the Middlesbrough manger.

Given that Martin O’Neill’s favourite band was Jethro Tull…it doesnt say a lot for musical taste of the Celtic Park hot-seat.

However…maybe it does mean that bad taste in music equals silverware!!

Anyone know of what band Tony Mowbray liked??

Lordofthewing….aaahhh, we’re only joshing. Its one of they ones we probably dislike them because of knowing too many people that really big up James. They’re by nowhere near the worst band but equally….don’t think they’re much special.

As for James….we could see the good points of the move but if it doesnt happen, it doesnt happen.

I thought Martin O’Neill’s fav band was the Faces/Small Faces which is by miles better than the hairy flute solo lot.

As for David James. Would do a great job for a season or 2, but if someone younger and with potential is available then it’s a no-brainer. Ditto with Campbell.

As for James the band, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Tony Mowbray’s fav singer was Cheryl Cole. Looks great on paper but (miming skills aside) trying to make it work ain’t gonna happen.

Neil Lennon probably still jumps about the house playing air guitar to ‘Teenage Kicks’. The Undertones will be his benchmark!

  • I know Neil Lennon used to be a fan of Kasabian from his Leicester days and has mentioned in the past that he liked the Stone Roses.

I’m not sure what he’s into these days. Maybe it’s this lot going with his recent press conferences.

Were kasabian around in Lenny’s Leicester days? Jeezo I’m getting old!

Footballers are renowned for having notoriously BAD taste in music. Usually it’s a terrible mix of piss poor weak chart Rn’B and commercial Hip Hop. Finding a footballer with an agreeable or alternative taste in music is rarer than (Bill) Halley’s Comet!

Find any Celtic player interviews from the 80′s (I have several programmes from when I was a wee kidda) and 99 times out of 100 they all listed their musical tastes as U2 and Simple Minds and nothing else! Why did these two bands go hand in hand?

  • WeKnowSFA

We can confirm the first time Kasabian played King Tuts in Glasgow – Neil Lennon was in attendance.

Lennon would have moved to Celtic long before the band took off but you can imagine Lennon would have been aware of them or the members before they left.

Footballers growing up spend their time playing football, the music they’ll mainly hear is mainstream stuff that is always available to them or the stuff that is played in the clubs they commonly frequent.

Been a while since we’ve been in Karbon but bands like Wilco, Smog or Crystal Castles were conspicuous by their absence!

As for the liking of U2 or Simple Minds – all about the hair :-)

You’re right, the 80′s was the time of the mullet. Charlie Nic spent the whole decade trying to look like Bono but without the graceful Irish eloquence (whatever you say about the twat Bono, he could talk all of the tea out of China) . “Is that no’ pure ironical Jim?”

Defending players’ crummy musical tastes on there hangouts is wrong. I have been in several cheesy clubs before and not once have I had the urge to seek out a Black Eyed Peas or Mr Hudson LP!

As much as I would love to see it I cannot for the life of me imagine Boydy or Scoosh talking up the latest Mars Volta or Gogol Bordello album!

I’m sure that there will be exceptions out there and some footballer will have extensive knowledge of the US garage and Uk psychedelic scenes of the 60′s. To get back to the original point (whatever that was) David James might be the man!

Mendieta remains one of our favourite players, principally because he loves The Velvet Underground!

Think he writes articles on the UK music scene for a Spanish magazine or website during his time in Britain!

You’d like to think Scott Walker, ex St Mirren, would listen to a bit of his namesake!

And Craig Brown loves the Klaxons – he went mad for that Nu-Rave scene a few years back, he was close to doing guest vocals on a ShitDisco track but it fell through at the last minute!

  • Billy Starks Irish Jig

Wow. That’s a great start with Mendieta, and the VU don’t even sing in his native tongue!

Didn’t Neil Young used to be a goalie for someone like Arbroath? There must have been a James Brown to. His goal celebrations would have been a blast!

Couldn’t auld Broony have just phoned his vocals in? From what I hear he’s quite good at leaving telephone messages!

BTW, if you’re ever lucky enough to have a pint with Tommy Docherty, don’t get him started on Dubstep!

  • Efrain Juarez doing that Scarf above the head press shoot that usually means that anxious fans can relax (until they think back to Maurice Johnstone)

I heard James came to sit down for talks but got a poor grip of the chair.
Only kidding, similar to your article the other day i think he is a very good keeper but your average fan will still follow the party-line played out in the media that he is still some sort of hazard. That is far from the case. The haircuts and funny nickname have damaged a reputation that should be held a lot higher based on recent seasons. He appears a calm thinker and very professional.
I hope it is a case of him stalling ahead of another premiership club coming in and offering him first team football as i reckon he would be a good signing for Celtic.

  • Quagmire

I see Juarez turned down Barcelona to sign for Celtic, according to the interview on STV last night anyway.

You really couldn’t make this shit up, well you could because the Scottish media certainly seem to anyway!

  • WeKnowSFA - Gary Hooper holding the no 88 Celtic Top above his head at Glasgow Airport

Gary Hooper holding the the world famous no 88 Celtic Top above his head at Glasgow Airport as Celtic fly out to face Braga in the the Champions League qualifiers.

  • WeKnowSFA

BBC said that as well yesterday.

Bad, sensationalist or lazy journalism. Think it may have been derived from previous articles and the player’s history…blame it on the translation.

We’re just gutted that Juarez never had a Celtic subbutteo team as a kid or a wee pal who brought him strips back from Scottish holidays!

Scots hacks aren’t what they used to be!

  • Quagmire

Whats with the 88 number, surely that’s not his squad number for the season?

  • WeKnowSFA

    Sponsorship deal with Foxy Bingo.

Celtic PLC have announced that in a break from the traditional 1-11 numbering and then squad numbers around that, the clubs players will be wearing the most popular bingo numbers on the back of their kit.

Gary Hooper is sure to be the favourite of two fat ladies when he bangs in the goals whilst wearing the number 88 jersey

  • The number 88, is a very significant number in the history of Celtic and also for the new signing Gary Hooper who was born in 1988.

Celtic were formed in 1888 and on their 100th Birthday the team won a league and cup double against the cash rich Graeme Souness Rangers Team.

  • quagmire

I knew the 1888 bit ok, wasn’t aware thats when the lad was born though. Do you think he or the marketing department chose it??

  • quagmire

PS – You only won that league because of big Butchers broken leg!!

  • Quags,,,, who’s leg did Terry Butcher break?

Celtic had more points than other teams at the end of the season that’s usually how they decide who get the title unless I missed the small print in the the rules that year,

As for the squad numbers, they usually look at what’s available and let the player choose. 88 won’t cost any more than getting 10 on the back.

  • WeKnowSFA

Hearts were the runners up in the Scottish league that season, finishing 2 points above Rangers.

  • Quagmire

Big Butch broke his leg against Aberdeen and we never really recovered after that and yes your right Celtic won because they had the most points and therefore deserved the title. Was merely an observation on my behalf as to why I think we didn’t win the league!! Mind you we didn’t half do well the 9 seasons after that though!

  • Quagmire

Seems Bristol city is more of an attraction to a washed up calamity keeper than a chance to play in the SPL.

  • WeKnowSFA

Bristol is a very nice city….

Could be plenty of reasons why James would turn down Celtic – one massive one being if he saw the game on Wednesday, would you sign up to play behind that defence?

Good to see you’re keeping the chin up about Glasgow teams not getting their potential transfer targets Quagmire ;-)
