Indiscipline hampers the Dons
Five red cards in five games isn’t good
The red card for Jerel Ifil at Celtic Park wasn’t the turning point for Aberdeen but it continued a worrying trend for the Pittodrie club. That was the fifth red card shown to Aberdeen players in their last five games and no club would be pleased with that statistic.
It all started on October 31 when the Dons had a Halloween horror show at Easter Road away to Hibs, with two players being sent off:
Oct 31 – (a) v Hibs. Lost 2-0. Red cards for Ross and McGuire
Nov 7 – (h) v St. Johnstone. Won 2-1. No red cards
Nov 21 – (a) v Motherwell. Drew 1-1. Red card for McDonald
Nov 28 – (h) v Rangers. Won 1-0. Red card for Kerr
Dec 5 – (a) v Celtic. Lost 3-0. Red card for Ifil
It is not as if the results have been disastrous, or much worse than the form shown by Aberdeen in the fixtures prior to this but being reduced to 10 men is not going to help the club pick up points.
The draw away to Motherwell would have been extremely infuriating as McDonald was sent off for celebrating his equalising goal. Just when Aberdeen should have been focusing on chasing all three points, they were immediately put on the back foot and lost all momentum.
Like most managers, Mark McGhee naturally feels that things have gone against his club at times but he was fairly honest about the red card issued to Jerel Ifil at Celtic Park;
“The only complaint I have with is Jerel Ifil. Of all the red cards we’ve had, it’s the first I felt was warranted.”
“It was stupid, reckless and unnecessary”
It is hard enough taking on Celtic at Celtic Park, to do so with 10 men is even harder.
What has to be of concern to Aberdeen is the fact that this could land the club with a fine in the future. The SFA tried hard to punish regular bad behaviour and the club will be hit in the pocket. With Aberdeen’s debt level seriously impacting on their ability to bring new players in, any further expenditure will only make things harder for the club.
Is there a discipline problem at Pittodrie?
