Hamilton to lose James McArthur
Another talented youngster to leave the Scottish game?
Hull City have been named as one of the clubs interested in Hamilton youngster James McArthur but boss Billy Reid suggests the player has a few admirers.
There has been a lot of media speculation about McArthur in the past few years and there may have been surprise that the player did not leave New Douglas Park during the summer of 2009.
With this Sunday’s game against Rangers likely to be called off due to the big freeze, McArthur may well have played his last game for the club.
Manager Billy Reid certainly thinks the player is on his way;
“I think there’s dialogue between certain clubs and the chairman; I don’t have anything to do with that,”
“In terms of finances, I leave that to the chairman.”
“But it’ll be a huge loss if James leaves the club.”
“I’d like to hold onto James, obviously, and have him here until the end of the season.”
“But the deal has always been – with any of our younger players that come through – that if somebody comes in and the offer is acceptable to the club, then we’re not going to stand in his way.”
And this is the reason why Hamilton Academicals are such a good club for youngsters to go to. If you are good enough, you will get your chance in the first team. And if you are good enough in the first team, you can earn a move elsewhere, with the club’s blessing.
It can be a risky strategy if you are reliant on selling youngsters to stay afloat but Hamilton appears to view the income as a bit of a bonus. No doubt part of their budget will factor in player movements but if the next crop of youngsters can generate the same level of interest that the gang that got Hamilton into the SPL can do, the future of the club will look secure.
Hamilton fans, will the loss of McArthur affect your survival chances?
