Falkirk and Kilmarnock face the week from hell
Both clubs fail to hold a winning position

Around 15:40 on Saturday afternoon, things were looking very bright for Kilmarnock. They had just taken the lead at home to St Johnstone and relegation rivals Falkirk and St Mirren were drawing 0-0. Before the half-time whistle that had all changed with Falkirk taking the lead and playing against ten men whilst at Rugby Park Killie conceded a soft goal to level their game.
A goal in each game in the second half saw Killie lose and Falkirk lose the chance to leapfrog Kilmarnock by letting their Paisley guests equalise. This goal sees St Mirren virtually safe, it would take a ludicrous amount of goals in midweek for Kilmarnock and Falkirk and then a draw at Rugby Park to even remotely put St Mirren in danger. And that’s assuming St Mirren lose their two games, so let’s just remove St Mirren from the relegation talk.
Kilmarnock : 29 points and a goal difference of -23
Falkirk : 29 points and a goal difference of -26
Both sides are in action on Wednesday with Falkirk welcoming St Johnstone to The Falkirk Stadium at the same as Kilmarnock head to Aberdeen. Given the way that Hamilton hammered Aberdeen, that may not be the worst place to go to but Killie have only scored four goals away from home all season.
Hopes will not be high amongst Kilmarnock fans for the trip but a lot will depend on whether Aberdeen players are able to give their fans a reaction on Wednesday. Strange results can happen at the end of the football season so there may be a further twist in the tale.
At the moment though, you would say that Falkirk are the more likely to get a positive result in midweek but regardless of the outcome, the matter will not be decided until the end of the game between the two sides at Rugby Park.
The split has its critics and it is obvious something needs to change with regards to fixture transparency but when the games can be gerrymandered in such a manner to create this tension; it has to have some value and benefit.
Anyone confident enough to say who is going down?

If we lose and they win in midweek it is all but over as we’d need at least a 4 goal swing which just won’t happen. We can’t afford to look to the weekend yet we must get something on wednesday first.
Say Killie win by a goal and Falkirk lose by a goal, the respective GDs are: -22 and -27.
So in that scenario, a 3 goal victory for Falkirk is surely not out of the equation? When everyone in the stadium knows that scenario, the nerves would be jangling if Falkirk opened the scoring. We wouldnt say a Falkirk loss and Killie win on Wednesday – makes it impossible – very difficult but not out of the question.
And thats hypothesizing about Killie winning at Pittodrie. Aberdeen are clearly rubbish at the moment but you may well see a reaction from them after Saturday’s dismal showing. And of course, Falkirk have a chance of picking up something at home v St Johnstone. Will you be there on Wednesday night TBA?
Still a lot of relevant football to be played at the foot of the SPL.
We’ve only scored 3 goals in a match twice this season. On both occasions we’ve conceded: first 3 and then 1. The stats don’t look good for that turnaround but hey our motto at Falkirk is Expect The Unexpected!
Yeah…but none of them were last day deciders!!!!!!
It’s all ifs and buts at the moment – we’ll have a better idea come Thursday morning – any excuse for us to bring the old abacus out!!
