Falkirk grab a lifeline in SPL survival fight

by WeKnowSFA

Pressure turns on Killie

WeKnowSFA - Falkirk

Credit to Falkirk, they really had to grab three points today to keep the relegation dogfight alive and did so with a Ryan Flynn goal just before the half-hour mark.

The stats make it look as though it was a bit of a smash and grab win for the Bairns but that doesn’t matter. The pre-match talk from the Falkirk camp was about getting the points, not the plaudits which is the reality of the situation they are in.

And the reality sees them one point behind Kilmarnock but they do have a poorer goal difference. However, with the two sides set to meet after the split, as well as plenty of other football to be played. There is a real battle with regards to staying in the SPL.

Attention now turns to Kilmarnock who host Aberdeen on Sunday and anything other than a home win will see the Ayrshire club in trouble. Jimmy Calderwood’s team travel to Tynecastle before the split but will take some comfort from the fact that St Mirren and Falkirk meet in Paisley next weekend.

This guarantees someone dropping something so if Killie can pick up something in their next two games, they could have a bit of leeway going into the final five games.

It is easy to see why people do not like the split but it brings about an exciting edge to the season.

Bairns, how optimistic are you now?

Pressley appears to have galvanised the squad and for a bit of luck here and there, they might be off the bottom. Credit to them for getting three points out of that ‘quagmire’ of a pitch in Motherwell and with the St Mirren draw as well, it’s sets up a grandstand finish to that relegation fight.

  • Credit where it’s due. Pressley has got them organised and playing with a real spirit, it’s never going to be the greatest set of players and the squad is tiny. We’ve been playing well for the last few weeks but, for the first time in a number of weeks we got a few breaks on saturday and held on for the win. The proof will be whether we can keep it up next week as this is something we have failed to do all season. Ryan Flynn has been AWESOME recently and Darren Barr was a colossus back at centre half on Saturday, keep him there and keep punter McLean away from the first 11 and we might just might stay up.

It was a very well worked goal to win the game on Saturday.

Must have been a bit gutting to see Killie win on Sunday but being within touching distance at the split gives hope.

It could all change in a week or two but the relegation battle looks fairly interesting, we think its a three-way fight between Falkirk, Killie and St Mirren….think the rest will be safe.

  • Yeah, the Killie result was disappointing but not surprising. Aberdeen are gutless and could lose to any team with something to play for. As could St Johnstone after the split when they have nothing to fight for except for seventh. it does look like a 3 horse race now which is a shame as I’d love to drag The Dons into it but I think they have just managed to garner too many points. Killie are looking very similar to Inverness last year, they got a boost with a change of manager and got a couple of eye catching wins against ‘the big teams’ but remind me? who went down?

  • McGivern was at Killie First

I didn’t find Killie’s result on Sunday disappointing at all.

Killie’s supposed recent slump didn’t really contain any surprises. We played Celtic, Rangers, Hibs and Motherwell (the last 2 both away). We didn’t expect much from them. Hamilton was the only really disappointing one.

I don’t see us having any problems playing the teams around us after the split.

Like you say, new manager in gives u a lift. Pressley’s impact will fade in a coupe of weeks. Falkirk are the poorest team in the league for the second year in row, don’t see them getting away with it this year again.
