Falkirk fan in the WeKnowSFA spotlight: Part 6
New sounds and the national team
We’ve discussed the domestic game and Falkirk, so no doubt Graeme is hurting at yesterdays late reversal to St Johnstone, so it is just as well that today we run with Graeme’s opinion about the national team.
So Graeme, are you a fan of the Scottish national team?
GB: International football for me is still the purest form. If you are at the World Cup, then surely that is the major thing for any footballer.
Are you happy with Craig Levein being in charge?
GB: I think the appointment of Levein is good. The job of the national coach is to organise and motivate. You don’t have the time to do any more. The two prior to Burley could do that and we were better because of it. Even with players with limited ability, they can get them playing above themselves.
Levein will have a bit more imagination than McLeish or Smith. I think he is more intelligent than them and I think he will get more out of the players than they did.
I was unconvinced by Levein at United for a while. His teams at Hearts were 4-4-2 and target man but they played a bit better football for a spell. And that’s why Iwelumo is back in the squad, he can’t resist the main target man.
The squad was probably more conservative than most would want but I think Levein will take his time. There will be a lot of changes but it will be gradual.
Are you optimistic about gaining a play off place?
GB: Czech Republic aren’t as good as they were, I hope to take all the points from the smaller teams and Spain, well, they are streets ahead of most nations.
How do you feel about the fixtures?
GB: It’s a bit strange, 11 month gap isn’t it? Better than playing in June and the smaller group means no March game. I’m majorly opposed to last game v big hitters. I see the thought, it hasn’t worked the last two times and whenever Scotland need something, of late, we just aren’t good at it. I wouldn’t have done that but you don’t know what the ins and outs of the negotiations were.
The first two games are good and should give a platform. Hopefully the Spanish game will be an irrelevance but we will likely need to do something from it.
With this fixture taking place so far in the future, it is hard to look forward to it with any great insight but keeping an eye on the Spanish team at the World Cup this year should prove enjoyable, if not a little terrifying.
