Evening Times do their best to sell Celtic star Aiden McGeady

by WeKnowSFA

Transfer window slow news day for everyone…including us

WeKnowSFA - Celtic

8 days into January and the only real excitement has come from the derby games and the battle not to fall on your archie when going for a pint. Okay, it is forgotten that Celtic had already snapped up Ki Sung-Yueng (well, forgotten by the SFA or their South Korean counterparts) but there hasn’t been a lot of transfer news yet.

Rangers have certainly shown willing in their attempt to keep Kris Boyd at Ibrox and one WeKnowSFA reader was delighted with this. Delighted that it showed his club had an ambition to keep their main man and delighted that the media would be sick at the thought of Boyd staying.

The Evening times may have come as a bit of a shock to our reader today as they have two writers offering opinion pieces why Aiden McGeady should up sticks and head down South.

It’s all about opinions and what a great way to fill column space on a quiet day but there isn’t really much to argue about. All but the most hard-line of Celtic fans would say that Aiden McGeady should move away at some point for the good of his career.

The player has stated an ambition to play elsewhere at some point in his career and there would be an element of disappointment if he never moved, perhaps as if to say that he never fulfilled his potential.

Not that WeKnowSFA wants to punt one of the most talented players out of the country.

McGeady has been on sparkling form of late and it would be good to see, when he is ready, he has the ability to perform consistently on a higher level. That time isn’t now though.

So…bearing in mind the Evening Times have previously found fan with a laptop Darryl King to implore his club should keep Boydy at the club, as well as similar opinions this week from Thomas Lindsay and Alex Rae, should anyone be upset at stating their opinion Boyd should stay?

No they shouldnt, why shouldn’t a Glasgow newspaper do its best to keep the best talent in the city?

So of course, back to Aiden McGeady, what was the opinion of the two Evening Times writers?

Yes, he should move.

The only difference came in whether he should move now or in the next window.

That is hardly the sort of journalism you would expect to see in a paper you are expected to pay for.

Opinion B says go now to anyone who’ll have you….Opinion A says go now or very soon and to a slightly higher club than the one that is linked with you now.

Was there no one available to offer Option C? No, stay and make yourself a hero at the club you always supported as a boy…don’t let the loyal fans down?

Was there no one available to provide a direct comparison?

Maybe the Evening Times could have considered the Nathan Barley for SugarApe route?

Rufus Onslatt: We should give Nathan Barley a column.
Ned Smanks: Yeah, we should give Nathan Barley a column.
Rufus Onslatt: Yeah like call it…”Nathan Barley’s Column”?
Ned Smanks: Hey, let’s just call it “Barley”, man.
Rufus Onslatt: Yeah, man, or like “Nathan”.
Ned Smanks: Yeah, cause like, that could be like two columns.
Dan: [sarcastic] Two columns.
Rufus Onslatt: Yeah, and like maybe one would be *better* than the other one.
Ned Smanks: Yeah, yeah, and you? and you’d only read the good one.
Dan: [impatient] How would you tell which one was the good one?
Ned Smanks: [dumbfounded]
[pauses]
Ned Smanks: Check ‘em out. Direct comparison.
Rufus Onslatt: Like, you’d read them both to find out which is the best one.
Ned Smanks: Yeah, and then you’d just read the good one.

At the moment, it is all a moot point as Celtic have not welcomed any bids for Aiden McGeady, unlike some of the other players they would be willing to offload.

At some point Aiden McGeady will go but if Kris Boyd should remain at Ibrox until at least the end of the season because of his importance to Rangers, the exact same can be said for Aiden McGeady and Celtic.

Okay, it’s a slow news day and we’re bored with nonsensical rumours…any excuse to bring Nathan Barley into it.

If your team cant play this weekend because of the snow, how you will occupy your time?

Big Deal slow news more important things in life who gives a fuck what arsehole journalists write.BTW its a certainty that the SFA made a hash of it again they really are a joke always have been.

I’d love him to stay but to earn and learn more he should go. I live in London and it always bugged me when people would put down Larsson “yeah he’s good, but that’s in the SPL.” Unfortunately the state of Scottish football means the ‘greats’ will definitely outgrow it, and I think McGeady has the potential to become a ‘great’.

I’d like another year or two of him at Parkhead first though. He can work on his finishing, and become a true Parkhead legend, leave at 25/26 and still get at least 5 years elsewhere, as a more finished product, and to a better team than Birmingham (no offense to them, but I don’t think they’ll last and a smaller silkier player isn’t really what they’re geared towards).

Loving your comments Dan – if anyone needs reminding there is more to life than football, listen to this chap.

Cheers BeastieBhoy – agreed about the Birmingham angle.

Eck is doing a terrific job down there at the moment but they will be a mid-to-lower team at best when it pans out.

Aiden isnt good enough for a top 4…..but you would like to think he could do a job for a European chaser?

Agreed on the time scale for him to move.

Supposedly Jim Mclean in the Record has an even better article where he states he would prefer Barry Robson to Aiden McGeady.

Don’t forget the caveat in opinion B, that although he’s not good enough for the ‘BIG’ teams to pay the asking price, a move to Feckless at BRUM would be the perfect move!!! Ye couldnae make it up!
The other classic this week was the, “Mendes prices himself out of the market” story for the hard of thinking this week.
It’s funny that it came in the week that Celtic actually DID price Aiden out of the market!! Are all Scots ‘sports jurnos’ 14 year old plooky wee boys??
Or do they actually not retain any of the pish they spout out to us every day themselves?

NEWS FLASH- RANGERS IN FINANCIAL TROUBLE SHOCKER -STOP- BANKS WANT THEIR DOSH NOW -STOP- EVERYBODIES FOR SALE -STOP- ANY DECENT OFFER ACCEPTED -STOP- LOYDS BANK ON THE BOARD MAKING FINANCIAL DECISIONS STOP

BTW Medes is ofski, what a shower of total fannies!!

Its pathetic but what do we expect from the “Timmy Mhedia!”

    HAHAHA

  • Ned Stevens

Why would McGready want to stay with the also rans in a 2nd rate leauge instead of testing his ability in one of the best leauges in the world. The lad has proved he will jump ship at the slightest chance before when he opted to play for a foreign national team instead of the country of his birth and education.

He has took his game as far as he can in Scotland, he needs to move to improve as a player.

  • WeKnowSFA

Good work Ned, a well thought out dig in the middle of some decent facts, advice and backhanded praise!

There is maybe a wee bit of sarcasm in there…the time will definitely come for Aiden to move on to a bigger league…but he still needs to be more consistent. If he goes now, he will be at the lower end of the league…..if he can add more consistency, he will have his pick of better clubs.
