Good finishing the difference

With Hibs dropping points late on against St Johnstone, Dundee United moved into third place with a straightforward win over Falkirk. The bottom club have a style of play that belies their position but their finishing seriously lets them down.

One man who is a competent finisher is David Goodwillie and he grabbed the opening goal from the penalty spot for the home side.

If Goodwillie is a regular scorer, Morgaro Gomis is certainly not but he went on to grab two goals over the course of the game.

Falkirk boss Steven Pressley was moaning about the lack of a penalty award in the first half but the home side were worthy winners.

The fight for third place is definitely on and Hibs appear to be faltering badly at the moment. United, of course, had their wobble at the turn of the year and perhaps Peter Houston has some momentum going forward.

There are some tricky ties ahead for United with Hearts, Aberdeen, Hibs and Motherwell the opponents in their next four league games. After these, United will have two games before the split and will be in a better position to judge where they will be at the end of the season.

Not many clubs would be able to handle the loss of their manager and after their injury struggles, United have rebounded strongly and are well placed to finish the best of the rest.

Of course, that could all change in a week or two!
