Is Europa League group stages the Tangerine Dream?

It may be nearly three months since the Scottish Cup final win but the memories of that Hampden triumph over Ross County will still be fresh in the minds of every Dundee United fan that witnessed the game. 3 second half goals gave the Arabs a deserved win over Ross County and ensured United would be in the Europa League play-off round.

The current Scotland boss Craig Levein got a lot of praise for his time at Dundee United but it was Peter Houston that eventually guided the club to silverware.

He will definitely be relishing this opportunity to pit his wits in Europe and the lure of making the Europa League group stages is a big draw for any up and coming manager.

Like Motherwell fans, some United fans may be hoping to see a big name team come to Tannadice but more will be wanting an opponent that will allow them a decent crack at making the group stages.

To do so, United must overcome AEK Athens.

The first leg is at Tannadice with the second leg away in Greece.

The dates for the Europa League play-off games are the 19th and 26th of August.

Dundee United’s SPL fixtures around these legs are:

St Mirren (A) – Sat 14th August

Inv. Caley Thistle (H) – Sun 22nd August

Hearts (A) – Sun 29th August

After the euphoria of that Hampden day-out, it would be good for United to keep the momentum going a while longer. No one expects the club to re-capture their European glory days of the 1980s but passage to the group stage would be viewed as a huge success.

Can United get to the groups?
