Contract out for hit-man but not boss

Money matters at the Ibrox AGM

There was a lot of things said at the Rangers AGM but the fans will be more interested in how the on-field action will be affected.

Rangers fans will be pleased that contract talks have supposedly started with Kris Boyd. However, there is no indication that the contract offered is going to be of the same level that Boyd earns now, let alone of a value that is higher than his current wage.

Martin Bain stated;

“In particular with Kris Boyd, I spoke to his representative and I am aware of what Kris sees as acceptable as a contract. I have digested that and I’m in the process of continuing with discussions, but it has only happened recently.”

The past year has seen a lot of speculation about Boyd with Birmingham having a serious interest a year ago and talk of teams from Germany and Turkey also expressing an interest in the SPL top scorer.

The most recent interest has been credited to Galatasaray, who are said to be willing to pay a sum of £35,000 per week for the forward. This is a sum less than the weekly wage allegedly on offer back in January 2009 from foreign teams but things haven’t been great for the £ sterling against the euro.

Given that Rangers have also struggled in Europe this past year, perhaps it is the mark of being quintessentially British!

Whilst talk about getting a contract for Boyd has been on the agenda, it is not the same for the management trio at the top of the club, again, as it was outlined at the AGM;

“To clarify the position of Walter Smith and his assistants with regard to contracts, we are lucky to have a management team who are all true Rangers supporters.”
“Walter, Ally and Kenny have agreed to work without contracts to protect the club from having a management team that new owners might not want.”

It is a wonder why Martin Bain never asked Kris Boyd to play without a contract as he too is a Rangers fan. This would see the striker able to stay at the club he loves but means Rangers could refuse to pay him for the big games where he doesn’t feature.

That of course isn’t likely, which means the whole essence of “no contract” isn’t as dramatic as it sounds.

In brief, if the management trio aren’t fancied by any new Board, they can be removed quickly at not much cost. However, equally, if the management trio fancied a move somewhere else, they could hand in a notice and move off quickly.

Aside from that, things will roll on as normal at Ibrox.

Given the financial pressure said to be on the club, there was a lot of positive news stories aired at the Rangers AGM. Proof of an agenda-led media or positive spin from a club in trouble will be the order of the day, depending on your viewpoint of the Rangers situation.

The truth is usually always in the middle but what do you think?
