Out of Champions League, out of their depth?
That’s the end of that chapter for Rangers
It was a sigh of relief rather than the final whistle which was the major sound at the end of the match in Seville. Yes, Rangers were defeated and ended the group with 2 points but at least for now, their pain is over.
The final score was a farce compared to the domination of Seville but again, all credit to Rangers for making themselves very difficult to beat away from home. In the end, it took a Freddie Kanoute, who beat the pre-match predictions to start the match, penalty to split the sides.
For all the shots and possession though, it was a close score and there was always the nagging sensation that Rangers may nick an equaliser at the death.
Yes, it took over 80 minutes for Rangers to have a shot on target but when it remains 1-0, it is always open. Unfortunately for the Scottish champions, they were unable to grab an equaliser for their third 1-1 draw away from home this season.
Alan McGregor would have caught the eye in goals for Rangers and it may well be that the keeper becomes the Rangers player most coveted during the January transfer window. Neil Alexander is an able deputy but whether he can produce the stops that McGregor can on a regular basis is an altogether different argument.
So, after all the hope and promise, Rangers find themselves detached from the rest of the group and without European football after the New Year. The Road to Manchester and the inaugural Champions League campaign aside, has this not always been the way for Walter Smith in Europe?
Was 1-0 a fair score for the match in Seville?
