Celtic sack would be a blessing for Mowbray

by WeKnowSFA

It has to come now doesn’t it?

Sometimes when someone or something is in so much pain, the most humane thing is to stop the pain. We’re not trying to draw a comparison to Tony Mowbray’s tenure at Celtic and people suffering a serious illness, football’s football but it isn’t as important as life and death.

The thing is though; the most humane thing you could do to Tony Mowbray is to put him out of his current misery.

He looks the most miserable man on the planet (barring those in the stands wearing green and white) and is a man who appears to be out of his depth.

It’s not his fault for taking the job, he applied and was deemed the best out of the candidates who remained in the running. Yes he has had some bad luck, yes he has been on the end of some strange refereeing decisions but ultimately, Tony Mowbray isn’t up to the task of managing Celtic.

The constant changing of tactics and formations, baffling substitutions, unsettled line-ups, an attitude perceived to be weak and some of the most bizarre decision making you will ever see on a football field have all made the managers position virtually untenable.

In his post match press conference, Mowbray was making the same old noises about taking it on the chin and soldiering on so perhaps it is time for the decision to be taken out of Mowbray’s hands?

His pride or financial motives may mean he wont resign but there doesn’t appear to be the hope of any improvement for the hoops under him.

Of course, is it a case of better the devil you know?

The issue is not really about getting rid of Mowbray, it is about who could replace him and do a better job?

Many Celtic fans may say “anyone” but it is never as simple as that. You would think the club carried out a full search in the summer and if Mowbray was deemed to be the best candidate then, who is going to be better now?

Celtic fans
a) Should Mowbray be relieved of his duties?
b) If yes, who do you want to replace him?

Mowbray should resign it would look better for himself. This season has been a disaster start to finish, Ross County at this point are Scottish Cup odds on favourites. A successor doesn’t need much aside from an ability to stop Celtic conceding goals. My personal preference would be Mark Hughes, but honestly who knows.

It’s simple the man must go………I dont recognise Celtic anymore…………..most of them are not good enough to wear the Celtic shirt & the managers tactics are non existant there are no tactics only 11 men running in circles.

Only Rangers have inflicted a heavier defeat in the league in 30 years, deary me Mowbray is definitely the white John Barnes!

I think we possibly have the most skillful team at Celtic Park in some years, however, the consistantly poor results and boring football from his teams now, means he should be sacked.

With the players at his disposal, we should not be losing to teams like St Mirren, Kilmarnock etc etc.

The manager has to take responsibility for this and if he had shown he might be able to develop the team over time, then there may be a case to keep him, however he has not shown that skill over his term.

willie mcstay.. people saying mark hughes need to wake up, as if he’d manage in S.P.Hell. Even Coyle & Lambert don’t want it.

  • Remember Jock?

Celtic 10 points behind Rangers, it’s a joke surely?
The title is lost and Celtic would do well to dismiss Mowbray now, look for a new manager and install him asap enabling him to assess the strength of the squad, remove the deadwood and bring the playing staff up to the level expected of a Celtic team – Mowbray just cannot cut it at this level!.
Celtic are extremely lucky that they along with Rangers are virtually untouchable by the other PL teams as regards European football otherwise, financially, Celtic could be deep in it!

i cant believe it celtic got beat and a referee wasnt mentioned in any posts unbelievable , i never thought i would see the day.

Saturday’s attendance will be interesting, only a few brave souls will bother to go now and vent their spleen at what they are seeing.

Not since the days of Liam Brady can I remember seeing a Celtic team with no leadership, backbone or heart. The new Mowbray team was cobbled together in loan deals in January and for all the fanfare of Keane, it’s been a total waste of money.

Old Firm managers don’t survive defeats like last night, they also don’t survive losing the league to their rivals by such a large gap, potentially 16 points if Rangers keep winning their games. No, Mowbray will go, of that I’m sure.

So who next? You can forget your previous targets of Coyle, Martinez & Moyes. Levein may have been a serious contender had he not taken the Scotland job. I’ve heard Mark Hughes being mentioned, would be a bold and imaginative appointment, would he want the hassle and he would probably demand a Tosh McKinlay esque ‘War Chest’ to change around the squad that he would inherit. Slaven Bilic is another who would fall into the above category and lastly I’ve read some Celtic fans mentions Trappatoni, given his connections to the Irish national side, would he want it at his age either? Guus Hiddink is another that would be an amazing appointment, but I can’t see it either.

Could Mark McGhee finally land the job of his dreams by default?

I would agree with what Harry said,no tactics haven’t a clue what they are supposed to be doing on the park.
I would try and bring back Willie Mcstay,I just think he would make a better job of it.

  • WeKnowSFA

There is no doubt that McStay has did very well in all his positions – in Ireland (was it Sligo), with Celtic youths and reserves and now in Hungary…but there is still a nagging feeling about whether he has the experience necessary for the job. That is not to say that Willie McStay would not be a success, every step is a gamble, it just depends how much of a gamble the PLC board can make or is willing to take.

Who Celtic get to replace Mowbray (surely now it is when rather than if) is a totally different matter – the wants of the fans may be in a totally different ball park from the ambitions of the PLC.

If it goes to McGhee, there will be bedlam in the Celtic community.

  • Celtic need to act quickly on this.

He’s now lost the majority of the fans ans by the looks of it the players as well.

The quicker Celtic get someone in, the more time to plan their transfers for next season.

    Time to go Tony.

  • WeKnowSFA

Can Celtic get someone of merit in now though?

Has anyone of value had their circumstances change since last summer when the club was looking for a new manager?

  • GordonfromSpain

I personally think he should stay for another 4 or 5 seasons. Lets face it bhoys, St Mirren were knackered after Sunday, they ran their hearts out and still couldn’t score, so it’s obvious and balls on a dog that they would come to Parkhead and gub us four (4) nil (0). We need to wake up and smell the keich!

  • GordonfromSpain

The game was at New St Mirren Park, not Celtic Park
