Celtic and Rangers rumour mill goes absolutely mental

by WeKnowSFA

We’re struggling to keep up!

We expected the last week of the transfer window to be slightly sprightly but it seems as though Glasgow’s big two clubs can’t wait until then.

You know how it works, agents see Celtic and Rangers as two sides of the same coin so foreign players being offered to one inevitably get linked or associated with the other.

This has been quite noticeable today.

First of all, there is strong talk of Rangers swooping (hoho, that’s Scottish football journalism at its finest there) to snatch Manchester City youngster Vladimir Weiss on a season long loan. This will tie in with Walter Smith’s long stated desire to bring in wide players.

Of course, football fans with memories lasting longer than a day will recall that Weiss was heavily linked with Celtic, with quotes being attributed to the player stating how happy he would be to play for Celtic.

They remarks may be a bit embarrassing for the youngster but Newcastle United and Stuttgart have also been linked with the winger.

So that’s one.

The world of twitter is currently going mad with talk of Joseph Yobo, who appears to be coming to Glasgow on a season long loan. Which Glasgow club, that’s the bit that no one has quite gathered yet.

Initially, African journalist Colin Udoh stated that “the hoops are in the frontline” for the Nigerian defender but since then, well, many are believing that it is Rangers lining up the move for the player.

We personally think it is Partick Thistle who have launched an audacious bid, Thistle boss Ian McCall using his contacts at the BBC to put pressure on the players agent to send Yobo to Firhill.

The Jelavic rumours have remained bubbling under, with one tabloid newspaper stating how Martin Bain is set to go to war in an attempt to ensure the players dream move to Rangers is not wrecked by Rapid Vienna!

If we were involved in a war, Martin Bain is not someone we would hope to find fighting alongside us in the trenches but his dogged determination to seal this deal done may eventually pay dividends.

The Rapid Vienna line-up for their game against Aston Villa on Thursday night will reveal a lot.

We’ve discussed the Jelavic cup-tied situation quite a bit on site. Our take on it is, the Uefa regulations state that if he plays tomorrow in the play-off round, he is ineligible to play for Rangers in the Champions League group stages.

Annoyingly though, it appears to be a matter of interpretation and we accept that others will have a different view on it.

Let’s just sit back and see what happens on Thursday night. Who knows, Jelavic could have signed for Rangers or another club by then…or he may be absent from the Rapid line-up.

Just when children felt they could leave the house in safety, the Craig Bellamy story has taken another twist. A lesser site than this may make some joke about a long forgotten soldier emerging from the jungle and asking “has the Bellamy deal to Cardiff been ratified yet?” but we’re not sure on the PC-ness of that joke, so we’ll steer clear of that.

The latest twist comes with the Football League announcing they are examining the loan deal to ensure that it is a valid one before registering Bellamy as a Cardiff City player.

Ouch…what about all they Cardiff City fans that have rushed out and got Bellamy 9 on the back of their top…..that has to hurt!

The Shay Given loan deal rumour is still on the radar but appears to be no closer to being finalised.

As Rangers won the league, they don’t have to concern themselves with any pesky European games this week but Celtic, as well as Motherwell and Dundee United are in action on Thursday night but it looks likely that Thursday will be a busy day for both sides of the big split.

Please, help us out, do you have any rumours to share?

Weiss is on his way to Ibrox to complete a season long loan this lunchtime according to the Herald, it states that Walter Smith enquired about the player 6 weeks ago and was asked to come back near the end of the window for clarification and availability and it appears he has got his man.

It’s now reported that Jelavic is threatening a walkout to ensure his move to Rangers goes through.

The football league are looking for answers from Cardiff regarding their Bellamy loan deal, probabaly as a direct result of Motherwell’s Frankie Howard demanding payment for the sale of Paul Quinn and rightfully so. Cardiff however are adamant that it all adds up, but as yet the football league has yet to register Bellamy to Cardiff so perhaps Celtic are hanging on for a miracle in that another marquee signing slips them by. Read the same rumours about Yobo, surely Celtic can’t be the ones looking at him? How many Centre Halves would that be? And just how many players will be in this squad?

  • trueblue

opps who did weiss sign for lol we are the people

  • trueblue… might be best holding tight with get it up yees until Weiss is on Ibrox pitch with the scarf above his head, there’s been a few let downs already this transfer window already for Rangers’ fans:

Remember when the Eagles never landed and
Jevalic has seemed to been in talks since Sir Walter’sstint at Ibrox.

Quags, it’s not the quantity of Celtic centre halfs, it’s the quality…or lack of it!

Yobo would be good for either side.

TB, Rangers have a far more pressing need for Weiss than Celtic have, however it is nice that your day is starting with a perceived get it right up ye to Timmy!

I’ll save the get it up yi’s for when he play’s and delivers. Should we get Jelavic soon to be renamed Bill Murray, then I will feel a bit better about the squad. If Yobo were to sign alongside some midfield cover, then it really will be a transfer window to feel good about, that’s if we avoid selling any more players though.

It’s only natural to have a pop at your rivals if the occasion arises but not when it’s wholly generated by the tabloids….who, for all their faults, know their fanbase very well.

Well it’s looking like 2 of the rumours are reaching a conclusion.

Weiss has signed for the year and Jelavic looking likely now. Other than seeing him against Celtic last year (where he looked good) i cant comment much more about Jelavic except if he meets half the hype i’ll be happy.

Weiss on the other hand excites me. Very impressed in the snippets i saw for City and i was even more impressed at the World Cup.

In terms of Rangers squad looking weaker this season as has been mentioned in many outlets – Webster in for Wilson, Jelavic in for Boyd, Weiss in for Novo/Beasley. Just need more midfield cover for the loss of (injured again) Kevin Thomson and squad is on a par if not stronger than last year.

  • Having seen the Celtic game last night and without wanting to jinx him Juarez look like he is going to be real star for Celtic this season. If Rangers finalise the deals for Jevalic and Weiss we could have the makings of a real battle this season.

    Let the battle commence.
