Will it still be Celtic Park to you?

by WeKnowSFA

Does this explain comments from the Rangers AGM?

The comments made by Rangers chairman Alasdair Johnston at the clubs AGM regarding naming rights for the stadium seemed to come out of nowhere.

However, some of the Celtic internet sites have been suggesting that Celtic have reached an agreement to sell the rights to the name of their stadium.

Celtic Park or Parkhead?

The name of Celtic’s stadium varies depending on which person you talk to. Yes, the stadium is located in the Parkhead area of Glasgow but for some, this is how it is referred. To others, it has to be Celtic Park.

There are also many Celtic fans who don’t seem to care what it is called, as long as the Bhoys play there.

According to Celtic Rumours, the sums involved are:

£5 Million a year for next 5 years.

Most football fans agree that this sort of deal would be money for nothing for a club like Celtic. The fans wont call the stadium anything different, the only people really affected will be the media and those who need to refer to the stadium name in a professional capacity.

Naming rights are effective for a new build stadium but for re-naming an existing stadium, it is a much less convincing argument.

There will be some who will feel this is a black day in the club’s history and selling out the ideals of the club…but in reality, some people need to get a grip! If the renaming of the stadium can add some extra bite to the managers transfer budget, then most Celtic fans will consider it a good deal.

Of course, many Celtic fans think this money will be going straight to the PLC as opposed to fuelling the next wave of Tony Mowbray’s team and that is where the cynicism will come into play.

Who would you want to see sponsor Celtic Park?

  • Maybe it ties is with the rumours that Fergus McCann is on his way back to Celtic Park. Could it be the “Fergus McCann Arena” or the “Bunnet Dome”

Who cares we will still call it Celtic Park, Paradise, Parhead or whatever the conversation requites.

    Show us the money!

  • jaz

    bring it on.

  • Gary C

Would be a very happy bhoy if this was true, but can’t see it. But on the other hand the amount of players being mentioned with the club at the moment!!!! maybe just maybe. While i’m here do you lads know if Celtic have received an answer yet from the SFA concerning the video evidence proceedures. Like your site. regards

  • feargal

I disagree with those who say its ok.The board have sold out everything else that we held dear, ripped out the heart and soul from our great club so i guess why not line desmonds pockets some more,Why not change the name of the team too
Stick the money up yer hole!

  • WeKnowSFA

Rumours that Fergus is coming back? Thats news to WeKnowSFA, maybe he fancies a new crack at the top men at the SFA.

“Show us the money?” With Tom Cruise being at the Seville v Rangers game and Tom Cruise of Arsenal making his top team debut, the Scientologist is getting his name all over the soccer pages tonight, his good friend David Beckham will be proud.

  • Lostbhoy88

Agree with feargal, money wont be spent on players anyway, sack the board

  • WeKnowSFA

Jaz, Gary and Feargal, thanks for your comments guys and welcome aboard.

Strong sentiments Feargal, not tieing in with the rest of the reaction from Celtic fans but no less valid. There is the argument where will it end and will the money be given to Tony Mowbray.

You can’t blame Celtic fans for having an air of cynicism where the Board is involved but who knows.

There is no doubt that clubs like Celtic are moving away from their fanbase – Feargal has laid his opinions out, is there a line in the sand for anyone else that would see them stop supporting their club?

  • WeKnowSFA

And thanks to you Lostbhoy88, some support for Feargal there, maybe it won’t be as popular a move as first thought.

  • Sorry Feargal, I agree with your sentiment, but the days when money was not the most important aspect of a football club have long gone. We can and must exploit all avenues open to us.

It’s why “they” wont be buying yet again in January and why we are streaking ahead of them. Our board have placed us in a position where we can do that.

Of course they are culpable for the loss of last seasons championship – but surely all income streams must be exploited to ensure it wont happen again in the forseeable future.

  • dannybhoy

FFS lazds money wont go towards the team stop talking balderdash if know money is going to the team they why do the books show that the club is in debt? renaming the stadium if this is true its a great move BTW i always call it Paradise.BTW money has always been very important to Celtic footballl club think some supporters should do a bit of research on Celtic History.

  • WeKnowSFA

    Thanks TAGF and Dannybhoy.

Dannybhoy is certainly true that money has been at the core of what Celtic have tried to do throughout their history….not always for the same reasons though.

Many Celtic fans will say there is a lot more to it than that but its certainly not always been the charitable and altruistic club that some fans state. Not that there is anything wrong with that either.

As TAGF says, money is now the most important aspect for football clubs and if Celtic want to compete in the transfer market with clubs like Hull or Bolton (!!!!!), they need all the income they can get.

  • Has to be Guiness Park. lol

  • Popes11

    ——- STADIUM.
Or just use the capitals for short.

Thanks for that your holiness, good use of the initials. We’ll maybe try and keep that off the site though! – cheers WeKnowSFA

  • MAX

As a young Bhoy I always called it Parkheed, but as an older Bhoy I generally call it Celtic Park, mostly when talking to non Celtic men. I think Parkheed slips in when talking to a fellow Tim.
As the author says, it will always be Parkheed, Celtic Park or Paradise to the support, so show us the money!
In saying that Paul Dean has a point, it would depend on what the new ‘official’ name was.
Something cool, The Pepsi Arena would sound good, but I think ‘The Pinappleade Stadium would be more Celtics level at the mo!!!

  • Fjocad

Betdaq stadium with robbie keanes wages cover, and the rest on players. Come on dermot it makes sense!!!!

  • WeKnowSFA

Cheers for all the comments guys, anyone got any concerns about what type of company?

Should it not be a betting or alcohol company? Does it really matter or would the Tennents Super Stadium encourage more kids to drink?

  • Rumours from some of the Celtic forums that it could be an Indian Company who are the interested party:

The Cobra Beer Pit, The Tata Motors Stadium, Jet Airways Arena, The King of Kingfisher Park and so on.

Anybody come with any other ideas.

  • Popes11

I just got told off… sorry if i offended. What if we got the Catholic church to sponsor us and call it ‘The Vatican Stadium’. Cool name?

  • WeKnowSFA

No worries Popes11, its a Celtic thread but we are a site for all of Scottish football and we’ll try to keep it welcome to everyone!

Not sure if the Catholic faith are looking to venture out into the world of sports sponsorship but it would be a name that would appeal to a number of Celtic fans.

Think of the lost money from away fans though, there would definitely be visiting fans who refuse to go to The Vatican.

  • Popes11

Yes but the obligtory half time collection split 50/50 with the church will cover the cost of no away fans lol.

  • Popes11

No point looking at all the big company names, we Will end up with the Bet Fred.com stadium.

  • Dannybhoy

Popes11 if your going to make comments about religion get your facts right the word Catholic covers more than 1 religion & the pineapple comment is pretty dumb as well get a grip.

  • shugmc

    Lloyds TSB

  • WeKnowSFA

Well Shug, it would be a good way for Lloyds TSB to appease Scottish football fans. Take some money out of the game, put it straight back in…its the circle of life!

Rangers fans would be extremely unhappy at the thought but it would be an issue for the British tax-payer to consider wouldn’t it?

  • Popes11

Dannybhoy you need to lighten up.I believe you must be the only person in Scotland who needs an explanation as to which Catholic faith i was refering to. As for the pineapple comment—- humour obviously isn’t your thing.

  • Dannybhoy

was not humour People of various religions go to Chapel only dumb people in central belt of Scotland for some daft reason think outherwise
