Five in for Celtic this January?

Four more to join Ki-Sung Yeung?

The Celtic Underground site have twittered that they have heard the club are “attempting to sign” two centre halfs and two strikers in the January transfer window.

An attempt is no guarantee that these players will be in but if the club is serious about these moves, it could go some way to placating the Celtic faithful.

Considering that the club has already secured the South Korean star Ki-Sung Yueng for midfield, the defence and striking positions are definitely at the top of any wish list.

Frankly, Celtic’s centre halfs have been playing at a terrible standard all season and the fans are crying out for a center half partnership that works. Darren O’Dea has returned from a loan spell at Reading but the fans will be looking for more.

The past day or so has seen serious talk about Belarusian centre half Dzmitry Verkhovtsov with some sources saying the player will undergo a medical on Monday, weather permitting.

If Verkhovtsov is signed, who will be the other player to arrive at the back?

Sheffield United’s Matt Kilgallon has been discussed, with the Daily Express stating that Celtic are set to have talks with the players club about a £1m move. The wages for Kilgallon may be problematic but the move could be smoothed over by a player plus cash deal.

Sheffield United are said to be interested in Celtic club captain Stephen McManus, although the same article states that the player does not want to go to the Championship.

This sort of poor judgment reflects the poor decision making made by McManus on the field. There would be no shortage of Celtic fans offering the player a lift to Sheffield if he was to go.

The fact that McManus is being mentioned in line with a move brings up the fact that some players may be exiting the club. McManus could be on his way and if Gary Caldwell does not leave in January, it is very likely he will be off in January.

As for strikers, many will be praying that Robbie Keane is one of the strikers being pursued by Celtic.

This rumour runs and runs, much like Keane himself but Spurs boss was slightly coy in saying that he wants to retain hold of his player, with the comments along the lines of the fact that Spurs wouldn’t want to lose the player, not that they would not lose the player.

Redknapp was far more enthusiastic about Michael Dawson…not that Celtic were in the running for him, so maybe there is a hope.
After all, Spurs are being linked with other strikers. As usual, Redknapp is doing his transfer dealings in the open and through the media by talking about Craig Bellamy. Controversy, rumour and entendres follow Redknapp about but he doesn’t help himself by flaunting the guidelines about tapping players up.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is also being linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur so moves away from White Hart Lane could depend on who moves in.

Another striker appearing on the radar would be Florin Costea, a Romanian international. The pride of Romanian football have already had a lot of joy in Glasgow this season but Costea plays for Universitatea Craiova. He has 6 caps for the international squad but has yet to score for them.

The player has a goalscoring record of just under 1 in every 2 games for his current club, which is the sort of ratio Celtic should be looking at, if not higher.

And if Keane or Costea, don’t come, there is always Kevin Kyle to fall back on.

As for possible exits from the forward line at Celtic Park, Chris Killen may demand an exit to obtain first team football before the World Cup and rumours persist that Scott McDonald could be offloaded to bring money in.

Celtic fans, would four more players satisfy you in January?

I don’t see why we don’t make a bid to bring Charlie Mulgrew back. He’s big , can go forward and has caused us a lot of trouble from dead ball situations. It helps that he’s ‘Celtic minded’ and knows the importance of the jersey.

    CELTIC MUST IMPROVE DEFENCE

  • Vincent

Charlie Mulgrew can’t defend, he’s got a decent shot from free kicks but Celtic need a no-nonsense centre half at the moment and Charlie is never that player.

Vincent and David, thanks for your posts and the best of the season to you.

Tony Mowbray’s style of play requires a lot of attacking play from his full backs, which they can do…but their defensive skills arent too great.

As for Mulgrew – great for dead ball situations but he really cant defend.

Celtic’s 3-2 win over Aberdeen last season, a game where Mulgrew scored and was lauded, came about because Mulgrew cant defend and Aiden McGeady was able to rob him.

Mulgrew was also posted missing in the 3-0 win for Celtic recently.

There is no doubt that Celtic could do with improving their full-backs, the centre halfs should be a priority.

i dont see why u guys r looking as far down as charlie mulgrew not fit for the jersey potentially were one of the biggest football teams on the planet with 2 billionairre shareholders so come on u 2 show the same commitment we all hoop lovers have bring in the best we deserve far better if u cant deliver go now and im sure others will keep the faith

Costea is very good. He could become the best striker of Scotland championship.

Sean and Danel, thanks for your posts and again, very best of the season to you both.

The laws of a PLC would probably prevent Desmond pumping in his own millions….but there are ways and means…certainly if the Keane rumour came true, Desmond would be funding some of it.

Danel….WeKnowSFA doesnt know too much about Costea so any recommendation is very welcome. Celtic fans wont be getting too excited just yet but some striking options would be well received.

    Cheers!
