Celtic chasing Jos Hooiveld?

by WeKnowSFA

Could this centre half cure Celtic’s ills?

WeKnowSFA - Celtic

Yesterday, STV gave us the first episode of The Football Years, today STV broke the news that Celtic are trailing Jos Hooiveld of AIK Stockholm, a Dutch defender.

The channel said that the defender has been at Celtic Park this week for a tour although no discussions have taken place between the two clubs.

There is no doubt that Celtic need to improve the quality of their backline, which is likely to be depleted even further with Gary Caldwell leaving at some point in the next 6 months. Stephen McManus is another one who is likely to find that his future lies away from Celtic Park.

So, Tony Mowbray needs reinforcements at the back and a tall and imposing centre half is exactly what the fans are crying out for.

The player’s agent said this;

“He is having a very good last two years of his career. He is really going step by step quickly forward.”

“Celtic is a bigger club than AIK. AIK still is a big club, they play weekly for 35,000 people. It’s a great club, they won the cup last year, they won the league title, but of course Celtic is another step forward in his career.”

So…sounding good? Well, Celtic fans wont be raising a glass to a new signing just yet as they have heard this sort of chat all too often and so many players trials end in a quick release, you get the impression that it was the Procurator Fiscal and Reliance running the rule over these players, not the Celtic management team.

One thing that may see the arrival of new faces at Celtic Park would be the exit of some of the current staff and the Middlesbrough link gets stronger and stronger.

Both news channels in Scotland made claims that Gordon Strachan could be taking up to four players of his former club this window and if thats the case, some Celtic fans may remember Strachan a little more fondly than they did during his tenure.

If Strachan takes a Gang of Four from Celtic, you wont hear too many complaints.

Here is a video clip of Jos Hooiveld causing bother in the opposition box:

Celtic fans, concerned with no new defenders yet?

I just hope we can actually get some players in this time. I can remember last year, ago no one wanted to play for us.
I’m surprised at Barry Robson being sold.

Some of the chat appears to be that they need to shift players before they can bring anyone in, so that could be the reason for no movement yet.

Also, Celtic have brought Ki Sung Yueng into midfield so perhaps Tony Mowbray thinks that they can handle the loss of Barry Robson. It certainly makes it a very young midfield Celtic have now.

Good point, we really need defenders and a decent goal scorer who suits our play.

Can’t believe Robson is being sold???? There are plenty more players in our team whose workrate/quality have been very poor compared to Robbo this season. Get shot off them first!!

    Hail x2

    Thanks KRT.

One problem with offloading rubbish / not trying players is that you have to find someone to take them.

Its probably the same with Donati…okay, it was pre and early season stuff, but Donati looked more interested under Mowbray than he had done since his first 5 weeks under Strachan. Could Celtic have sold him without the player having that sort of performance for a few weeks behind him?

if Celtic need the funds before they can buy…Robson is probably one of the better candidates to sacrifice.

Someone like Flood, Killen or Wilson would be good to get off the wage bill…but wouldnt bring in many funds.

Someone like McGeady, McDonald or Boruc would bring in a lot of funds…but would require a lot of they funds to bring in a direct replacement (okay, Boruc could be replaced by Zaluska)

Robson probably fits the middle ground. He has been in the team of late, so he will be missed but the funds he brings in could allow a player to be signed in a more desperate position.

Cutting the cloth to suit your means…that will never catch on in football will it?

Pity they cant get rid of Scott Brown what exactly has he done & what did he do in his last season with Hibs?????????????

  • WeKnowSFA

Even his biggest fan would have to agree that Scott Brown has been a major let down for Celtic.

The annoying this is that he has looked good at times for Scotland, even when his Celtic performances have been weak.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that Brown looks a far better player when he doesn’t have the ball.

Scotland inevitably surrender a lot of possession to other teams and Brown plays a key role in shutting them down, harassing and harrying them into making mistakes. This was what he did at Hibs too.

For Celtic, Brown will see a lot more of the ball and this put more attention onto his control and short-range passing, both of which appear to be very poor.

The rumour mill would indicate that Mowbray likes Scott Brown and his brief cameo in Moscow would suggest that Brown could have an impact under Mowbray…but many fans remain to be convinced.
