Boyd back in the Scotland fold

Rangers hitman to make Scotland return?

WeKnowSFA - Glasgow Rangers

Sky Sports News are running with the story that Kris Boyd has told new Scottish boss Craig Levein that he wants to return to the international team.

The striker famously spat the dummy when former boss George Burley left him on the bench for Scotland. Even though this was a position not uncommon to Boyd at Rangers at the time, the player made his international unhappiness known and said he would not play for Scotland again under Burley.

With the appointment of Craig Levein, the role of Burley as scapegoat has been complete.

Craig Levein is his own man and has indicated he would be happy to bring back all of the exiled players if their attitude was right. This is a mighty retreat from the statements released by Gordon Smith at the time of Boozegate when it was said that the players would not be selected again by Scotland.

Interim Motherwell manager Craig Brown recently said that he doesn’t think Boyd should be selected again for the national team.

“You’re either committed to Scotland or you’re not, it shouldn’t matter who the manager is.”

Levein clearly needs all of the best players available to be a success in the job so would be foolish to ignore the availability of Boyd but it does question the attitude of the player. If Levein does not pick Boyd, and lets be honest, in a backs to the wall away performance, Kris Boyd is not an automatic selection, will Boyd pull his nonsense with the ex Dundee United boss?

Probably not.

Kris Boyd has probably matured over the past year, his performances have shown greater depth but there is no doubt that George Burley was not afforded the respect his position deserved.

Should Boyd be welcomed back into the Scotland fold?
