Artur Boruc to return against Hapoel?

by WeKnowSFA

Celtic fans number one may replace rival Zaluska

Celtic may be sitting at the top of the SPL but the defence has been anything but impressive in recent weeks.

None of this has really been the fault of Lukasz Zaluska, although the goalkeeper hardly covered himself in glory at his former ground Tannadice.

Zaluska’s best performance came in the Europa League where Celtic held Hamburg to a 0-0 draw. Zaluska managed to pull off a number of great saves to enable Celtic to nick a point, even though their pursuit of progress in the Champions League looks to be beyond them.

After Artur Boruc required surgery to clear up an injury, Celtic sought special dispensation from Uefa to allow American youngster Dominic Cervi to come into the squad. It now appears that Celtic have returned to Uefa to enable Boruc to return.

Boss Tony Mowbray explained;

“We initially only had two ‘keepers in the squad, so we moved Artur out and got Cervi in.”

“He will be involved at some stage. We need to get Artur up and going.”

“He’s back on the training ground and looking quite sharp and yet I don’t see any great rush. Lukasz Zaluska has done quite well.”

It is an interesting one to decide if Boruc should be brought back into the first team for this match. There is no doubt that the Celtic back-line look stronger with Boruc in position but is the Europa League game the one to bring him back in?

Given that Celtic’s European campaign is virtually over, it would make sense to bring Boruc back in a game that has less pressure involved. He obviously needs games to regain match sharpness and this would almost be a free game for the man the fans call The Holy Goalie.

With tricky matches at Fir Park and Tynecastle following on from this Saturday’s match against Aberdeen, not to mention the New Year match, the Hapoel game could provide Boruc with a great chance to get 90 minutes under his belt.

It will be interesting to see how fit Artur is on his return as even his biggest fans will agree he has a tendency to pack on weight when he is absent from the team.

Tony Mowbray really needs a fit Artur Boruc in his side, so it may not be a surprise to see Boruc in between the sticks.

It will tough on Lukasz Zaluska but for the greater good, Artur may get the nod.
