Aberdeen’s season could still go either way

If form continues, they can be dragged down

Aberdeen have seven games to go before the split but five of these matches take place against teams currently in the bottom half of the table. If Aberdeen fail to make the top six, 10 of their last 12 matches will come against sides in the bottom half of the season.

Woo! Get yourself excited over that Dons fans.

However, it may not come to that.

Aberdeen, after the earlier defeat to Hearts lie eight points behind the Jambos and they have to overturn this deficit within seven games. It is a tall order but the fixture list for Aberdeen and Hearts could not be more different.

Hearts have just the six games left, so Aberdeen have immediately got a game in hand and Hearts have to play four of the top 5. This means the Jambos have only two games against opposition from the lower half of the table.

Even allowing for Aberdeen’s poor form and Hearts three wins in a row, the fixtures ahead will at least give Aberdeen fans some hope for a positive turnaround. With the games left to play, if Aberdeen can not pick up enough points to put Hearts under pressure, they will deserve to be playing in the bottom six after the split.

So that is looking on the positive and upwards. They are only 8 points behind Hearts, not insurmountable.

However, bottom club Falkirk are only 9 points behind Aberdeen (with a game in hand) so by the same logic, shouldn’t Aberdeen be looking down?

The scenario is slightly different as the number of teams between Aberdeen and Falkirk means it is very unlikely that all of them would be able to leapfrog the Dons but if Aberdeen are to even contemplate being in a relegation dogfight, it will confirm that Mark McGhee’s first season in charge has been a disaster.

Outsiders will say that there is a bit of excitement in the league when a team can be looking seriously at both ends of the table but it must be anguish for Aberdeen fans at the moment.

No team has a divine right to win games but the club should be doing better than what they currently are. How many Dons fans are looking back and wondering if Jimmy Calderwood should have stayed on?

Some managers reach a shelf-life in a job and it probably was the time for Calderwood to move on but the relative security of a top six finish was surely better than the current state of affairs?

It is not as though Aberdeen fans are the only set to get into a “grass is always greener” mindset but they are certainly paying for it this season.

January had its high points for Aberdeen whereas February has had its lows, if March and April can be positive, Aberdeen may still get into the top six.

Dons fans, confident of turning it around?
